Job Description

Job Title:
Power Systems Engineer - BMS & EPMS (Hyperscale Data Centers) Job Description The Power Systems Engineer for Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) is responsible for the full lifecycle of controls and monitoring solutions in hyperscale data centers. This role designs, programs, documents, integrates, and supports commissioning of BMS and EPMS, with a strong focus on mission-critical mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including HVAC controls, chilled water systems, power distribution, metering, and telemetry. You will work largely remotely while playing a key role in building out a specialized department in this technical domain. Responsibilities Design BMS and EPMS architectures for hyperscale data centers, covering both mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Develop, program, and configure control strategies for HVAC systems, chilled water topologies, and white space cooling in mission-critical environments. Engineer electrical power monitoring solutions, including integration with switchgear, circuit monitors, RPPs, transformers, and metering devices. Perform power quality analysis, including total harmonic distortion (THD), harmonics, and waveform distortion, to ensure reliable and efficient power distribution. Create detailed controls documentation using tools such as AutoCAD or Bluebeam, including drawings, control diagrams, and integration schematics. Implement and troubleshoot communication protocols such as BACnet/IP, Modbus/TCP, and TCP/IP networking for BMS and EPMS systems. Lead and support integration testing and commissioning activities for BMS and EPMS on new and existing data center projects. Map telemetry points and ensure accurate data acquisition, trending, and alarming for mechanical and electrical equipment. Write advanced Sequences of Operation (SOOs) for airflow and thermal optimization in white space and critical environments. Interpret and apply data center owner standards for controls and EPMS, including documentation and configuration requirements. Collaborate with project teams to ensure BMS and EPMS designs align with data center electrical distribution and mechanical design strategies. Provide remote and onsite technical support during project execution, start-up, and post-commissioning phases. Work independently to drive deliverables, manage priorities, and help build and shape a growing department focused on BMS and EPMS engineering. Essential Skills 5+ years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Building Management Systems (BMS) controls design and EPMS engineering. Strong understanding of chilled water systems and topologies used in mission-critical environments. Solid knowledge of white space cooling strategies in data centers. Strong understanding of data center electrical distribution, including switchgear, circuit monitors, RPPs, transformers, and associated wiring. Proficiency with BACnet/IP, Modbus/TCP, and TCP/IP networking for integration of controls and power monitoring systems. Hands-on experience with power monitoring and electrical power engineering in mission-critical facilities. Power quality analysis experience, including THD, harmonics, and waveform distortion. Experience using AutoCAD or Bluebeam for controls documentation and drawing production. Experience with commissioning, integration testing, and start-up of BMS and EPMS systems in operational facilities. Ability to write advanced Sequences of Operation (SOOs) for airflow and thermal optimization. Ability to interpret and apply owner-specific EPMS standards and documentation requirements. Data center or mission-critical facility experience, strongly preferred for this role. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Schneider Power Monitoring Expert (PME) or similar power monitoring platforms. Familiarity with large-scale data center controls and EPMS documentation standards. Familiarity with hyperscale data center owner-specific controls and EPMS standards and templates. Experience interpreting and implementing standardized EPMS design and configuration guidelines provided by the data center owner. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively with remote project teams. Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills to manage multiple concurrent project tasks. Motivation to help build and mature a specialized department focused on BMS and EPMS engineering for hyperscale data centers. Work Environment This role is primarily remote, providing flexibility to work from your home office while collaborating with geographically distributed project teams. You will travel periodically to data center project sites, with an initial focus on a facility in Michigan City, Indiana. Onsite presence will be more frequent at the start of the project for design reviews, integration testing, and commissioning activities, and will generally decrease as the project progresses. All travel and lodging costs for required site visits are covered, and project planning typically allows opportunities to return home on weekends during multi-week onsite engagements when the schedule permits. You will work with modern tools and technologies, including BMS and EPMS platforms, power monitoring systems, and design software such as AutoCAD or Bluebeam, in a mission-critical data center environment that emphasizes reliability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
