Job Description

Senior Engineer - EV Battery System Design Our Team Advanced Engineering Lab (AEL) is an engineering group at HATCI that focuses on advanced technology research and development applied to current/future production vehicles and future mobility. AEL covers a wide range of areas from the development of new vehicle concepts to computer-aided engineering and vehicle energy analysis and management. The Position HATCI is currently seeking a Senior Engineer - EV Battery System Design for our Superior Township, MI facility (near Ann Arbor). The Battery Research & Development team is an Engineering Department within AEL, which was established to undertake projects related to EV high voltage battery system development. This position reports to the Manager of Battery System Design within the Battery Research & Development organization.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Core responsibilities will include a subset of the following: Execute engineering projects to develop new high voltage battery systems to support Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis electrified vehicles (xEV). Design and development of xEV battery pack systems. Project management of parts or systems of battery packs or modules with focus on design release responsibility. Understand and follow high voltage battery system development and reliability standards, procedures, and specifications; ensure proper documentation and communication of test and development results. Benchmark competitor electrified vehicles for design, construction, process, and cost. Use benchmark data to drive internal development direction and design target setting. Communicate selected battery technologies to Korean Headquarters, introducing them to current or next-generation production programs. Manage research activities with external partners including national labs, universities, and suppliers. Investigate industry trends by monitoring publication of technical papers and reports. Understand and follow the department's business model, strategic direction, purpose, and mission. Set up engineering goals and objectives aligned with the department's direction, and drive execution, engagement, and results to accomplish them. Facilitate team collaboration through transparent communication. Produce and deliver presentations on key project milestones and achievements. Remain current with new technology and competitive products to drive innovation. Provide technical support for xEV battery system-related concerns for pre-production and post-production. Support xEV development in collaboration with the Korean Headquarters, fostering cross-pollination of knowledge and processes. Travel domestically and internationally up to 30%.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
Educational Requirements Basic:
B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or other related fields
Preferred:
M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or other related fields
Related Experience Requirements Basic:
2-5 years experience in xEV high voltage batteries, 5+ years in automotive
Preferred:
5-10 years of experience in xEV high voltage battery or system development in a production-intent environment, ideal experience could include any of the following:
Required Skills and Knowledge Basic:
Experience in xEV battery systems or component development in a production-intent role Ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional design reviews with internal HATCI teams, Hyundai Korea R D Center engineering groups, and external suppliers to drive timely technical decisions and issue resolution Proven experience conducting and producing Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) documentation for xEV battery systems. Experience managing Engineering Change Request (ECR) and implementing design revisions through product design development milestones. Strong knowledge of Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and supplier quality validation process. Experience developing and executing Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R) activities for xEV battery system performance. Prior experience with production / stage-gate / or Technology Readiness Levels 5 through 9 equivalent processes Experience with modern professional-level computer-aided design (CAD) systems such as Catia, NX, or Creo and a willingness to learn

processes Ability to read drawings, engineering and material specifications and understand implications of materials, processes, and construction techniques selected Foundational working knowledge and experience in xEV components, high voltage battery systems, and vehicle electrification technology Must be able to work with many different departments within HATCI and with its affiliates (e.g., Hyundai Korea R D Center, Hyundai Motor North America, Kia US, other overseas Hyundai R D centers, etc.) with a demonstrated ability to create relationships and facilitate work across company functions Good written communication and interpersonal skills Ability to travel both domestically and internationally
Preferred:
Prior experience with Catia V5 in modeling, surfacing, and detailing, adhering to standard
ANSI Y14.5 GD&T
minimums Prior experience with design / release experience in a xEV battery systems role, as primary or secondary responsibility for component or system level 5-10 years of experience in xEV high voltage battery or system development in a production-intent environment, ideal experience could include any of the following: Experience in designing and improving optimal battery cooling systems/structures. Highly skilled in cross-functional vehicle packaging reviews, including manufacturability and serviceability, with strong negotiation skills. Experience in enhancing performance and safety through advanced cell pressure mapping of xEV battery systems Understanding of strategies to ensure battery safety across various xEV crash modes, with proven experience in implementing design improvements. Strong insights into battery design trends and emerging future technologies. High voltage certification or previous experience with hands-on activity with high voltage battery packs with a good understanding of safety procedures required
