The Senior Staff Engineer serves as a company-wide expert with deep technical knowledge and expertise in their specific discipline, product, or technical area. This role leads high-complexity projects and initiatives, ensuring they remain on track and are implemented sustainably and effectively. The Senior Staff Engineer provides oversight and critical evaluation of engineering tasks within cross-functional project teams, setting technical direction and maintaining high standards of quality and execution. They are a key problem solver, resolving nearly all issues escalated within their team, and are relied upon to guide others through complex challenges. In all actions and decisions, the Senior Staff Engineer demonstrates ethical leadership, integrity, and sound judgment, modeling the behaviors and values expected across the organization. Demonstrates a high degree of creativity and foresight to support the business by providing context and technical specifications, documenting processes, and giving technical direction. Coaches and mentors Engineering staff as well as non-technical staff to acquire new skills and competencies.
Job Duties:
  • Provide expert-level technical guidance on high- and medium-voltage switchgear systems for both R D and product development.
  • Lead and contribute to design reviews, feasibility studies, and remote validation of HV/MV technologies.
  • Coordinate with U.S.-based cross-functional teams on development efforts, product requirements, and engineering documentation.
  • Evaluate and recommend technologies related to: SF6-free gas insulation, HV vacuum interrupters (VIs), Digitalization of switchgear (sensing, IoT integration, communication protocols)
  • Act as a technical liaison with vacuum interrupter manufacturers and other key suppliers.
  • Represent G&W Electric in industry forums (e.g., IEEE, CIGRE) to stay informed on evolving standards and contribute to global technical dialogue.
  • Support development of technical specifications, root cause analyses, and field issue resolutions.
  • Lead or participate in Alpha prototype activities including reviews, documentation, and remote field trials.
  • Monitor global trends in switchgear technologies and provide strategic input to the G&W product and technology roadmap.
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams, customers, and suppliers across different time zones.
  • Provide expertise in power testing procedures, lab setup, diagnostics, and interpretation of test results.
Required Experience:
  • BS Degree Engineering or Science related field 15 years of progressive experience in the area of specialization
  • PE and Advanced certification or other level of license
  • In depth knowledge of the applicable IEEE and IEC standards,
  • Expert knowledge of Transmission & Distribution equipment
  • Global travel to outside facilities and suppliers is required.
  • Effective decision making under time pressure, analytical / trouble shooting skills
  • Effective communication
  • Technical writing skills (writing test reports and technical papers)
  • Ability to learn and, at all times, adhere to proper safety protocols is required
Preferred Experience:
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Knowledgeable about test equipment
  • Experience with problem solving/troubleshooting.
  • Familiar with new product development Stage Gate Process
  • Experience with 8-step problem solving.
  • Experience with a variety of G&W products.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green, Black or Master black belt
Remote Work Requirements:
  • Ability to work independently and drive projects while collaborating across global time zones
  • Experience with digital tools for project tracking, CAD reviews, and virtual collaboration
