Job Description
Job Summary We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Locator to join our dynamic utility installation team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for accurately locating underground utilities and underground infrastructure prior to directional drilling operations. Your expertise will ensure safe, efficient, and precise installation of underground utilities, helping to prevent damage and service disruptions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work outdoors in a fast-paced environment, utilizing advanced utility locating technology and collaborating closely with construction crews, engineers, and clients to achieve project success. Duties Operate utility locating devices such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic locators, and vacuum excavation tools to identify underground utilities and structures. Interpret construction plans, blueprints, schematics, and site plans to accurately mark underground utilities and ensure compliance with safety protocols. Use land surveying techniques and tools to verify the location of underground utilities relative to project boundaries and site features. Conduct utility marking on construction sites by clearly delineating underground infrastructure for drilling crews and other stakeholders. Perform site plan interpretation to understand project scope, identify potential conflicts with existing utilities, and plan safe drill paths. Communicate effectively with clients, project managers, and field teams regarding utility locations, safety concerns, and project updates. Adhere strictly to safety protocols during all field operations, including vacuum excavation for utility detection and ground-penetrating radar surveys. Maintain detailed records of utility locations, markings, and site conditions for project documentation and future reference. Operate company vehicles safely while traveling between job sites in various outdoor environments. Assist with the setup of construction sites by coordinating with other trades and ensuring underground utilities are properly identified prior to excavation or drilling activities. Experience Proven service technician experience in utility locating or related field service roles within the energy & utilities sector. Strong background in land surveying, blueprint reading, and interpreting construction plans or schematics. Hands-on experience operating utility locating devices such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic locators, or other utility detection tools. Familiarity with underground utilities including gas lines, electrical cables, water mains, telecommunications infrastructure, and other buried assets. Knowledge of safety protocols related to outdoor work environments, construction sites, vacuum excavation techniques, and underground utility detection methods. Experience working on construction projects involving underground utilities or directional drilling operations is highly desirable. Ability to communicate clearly with clients and team members about utility locations and project progress. Valid driver's license with experience operating company vehicles safely in various outdoor conditions.
