Job Overview:
Step into a highly visible Mechanical Development Engineer role where your work directly shapes the core technology behind rotary screw air compressors. This is not a narrow design seat or a pure project management role-it is a hands-on, technical project leadership opportunity for an engineer who can take complex mechanical products from concept through design, validation, launch, and production handoff. In this role, you will own development projects tied to rotary screw airends, one of the most critical subsystems within the compressor. You will work through phase-gate new product development, apply engineering principles and analytical tools, solve varied mechanical design challenges, and help drive decisions around performance, reliability, cost, timing, and manufacturability. The work spans close clearances, tight tolerances, rotating equipment, bearing systems, gears, GD&T, CAD exposure, test planning, and technical analysis-while also requiring the communication and leadership skills to keep cross-functional teams aligned. This is an ideal opportunity for a well-rounded mechanical engineer who enjoys being the "Swiss Army knife" on complex technical projects: technical enough to dig into the design, analytical enough to solve hard problems, and collaborative enough to lead project calls, design reviews, schedules, and cross-functional execution. You will also manage shifting priorities across multiple development efforts while partnering with teams in a global engineering environment. If you want a role where you can stay deeply technical while owning meaningful product development from early concept through launch, this team offers the complexity, visibility, and long-term growth to make that possible.
Responsibilities:
Product Development & Execution Lead mechanical design and development for rotary screw airends from concept through production Define specifications and conduct technical design reviews Execute projects to meet cost, schedule, and performance targets Perform engineering analysis, trade studies, and solution selection Project & Team Coordination Develop and maintain project plans, schedules, and resource needs Coordinate with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals Support Engineering Manager and project leaders in achieving goals Testing & Validation Develop and execute test plans with laboratory teams Analyze performance data and generate technical reports Support root cause analysis and problem resolution Cross-Functional & External Support Provide technical support to manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and marketing Collaborate with suppliers on design and technical requirements Assist with warranty investigations and field issue resolution Documentation & Continuous Improvement Maintain design documentation compliant with ISO procedures Support BOM and engineering change release processes in PLM systems Apply lessons learned and FMEA to improve future designs Stay current with engineering tools and best practices
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering 7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience 5+ years of mechanical design and technical problem-solving experience involving mechanical systems, tight tolerances, close clearances, and mechanical design parameters Demonstrated experience with engineering project leadership and execution experience, completing two or more full project cycles Experience developing test plans, analyzing results, and using technical analysis to support engineering decisions
Core Competencies:
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills Ability to manage shifting priorities in a global, cross-functional environment Working knowledge of PLM and ERP systems in manufacturing 3D CAD experience, ideally Creo GD&T knowledge with
ANSI Y14.5
application Familiarity with stage-gate product development Working knowledge of DFMEA, DOE, and DFM/A Manufacturing and machining fundamentals, including cost, quality, and producibility impact
Preferences:
Rotating equipment experience Industrial machine design Bearing system design GD&T from a drawing perspective. FEA/CFD experience Travel and Work Arrangements Ability and willingness to travel 10-15% (primarily domestic to Ingersoll Rand testing and manufacturing facilities).
