Job Description

The salary range shown represents the minimum to midpoint salary for this position. The actual salary offered will depend on qualifications and experience. Under direct supervision, the drafting technician will work with the development and government project group performing drafting work for the preparation, execution and review of utility engineering and planning drawings. Reports to the Mechanical Engineer.
Must possess:
general knowledge of AutoCAD drafting software, GIS Mapping Systems and their application and must be proficient with Microsoft Word (tested), Microsoft Excel (tested), and Windows. Experience in ESRI systems GIS software is highly desirable. general knowledge of the terminology, principles, methods, practices, techniques, and instruments of engineering drafting. general knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. general knowledge of engineering records and maps. general skill in performing a wide variety of drafting work using various drafting instruments. the ability to perform technical computations. the ability to prepare draft cost estimates. the ability to learn to draft moderately-difficult engineering drawings. the ability to understand, follow, and transmit moderately-difficult oral and written instructions. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Successful completion of the FPUA Drafting Technician program and the recommendation of the Supervising Engineer OR graduation from on accredited two (2) year technical school or community college with major course work in engineering (AA or AS Degree) OR equivalent course work in an approved four (4) year program of study OR at least two (2) years full time experience utilizing AutoCAD and GIS software packages with a comparable utility or consulting engineer. Ability to pass basic Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel tests with a score of at least 70%. When considering new job applicants, a comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted in lieu of some of the minimum qualifications. (

There are also secondary functions, which the employee will be required to perform.)Performs routine CAD drafting using utility design software to complete projects for engineers, designers and senior technicians. Performs routine drafting and illustrative graphics functions related to the preparation of utility engineering plans, record drawings and visual aids. Drafts drawings by referencing notes, original drawings/as-builts or from verbal or written instructions. Assists engineers, designers and senior technicians in project design and preparation of plans and specifications. Assists in field data collection and surveying of FPUA electric, gas and fiber assets utilizing a variety of resources and technologies such as GPS, specialized mobile GIS devices, digital imagery and field notes. Uses AutoCAD with the AUD design application to perform routine calculations of distances, ties, angles, areas, stations, traverses and cross-sections. Produces finished drawings/maps with CAD software, including the diagnosis and correction of problems. Reconciles field notes with existing records; plots cross-sections and profiles; checks and keeps up-to-date, utility easements, or other maps; and interprets legal descriptions. Performs other duties, as assigned, including routine office duties.
