Job Title:
Survey Technician Job Description The Survey Technician will support an active as-built survey effort on a large data center project near Ann Arbor, Michigan. This role focuses on accurate field data collection, documentation, and reporting of installed utilities and site infrastructure using Trimble survey equipment and a project-specific local control grid (RGK). The position is ideal for someone who is comfortable working independently in a heavy construction environment and who understands construction-phase and as-built survey workflows. This is a 9-12 month project-based role with the potential for long-term opportunities and advancement based on performance. Responsibilities Perform as-built survey data collection for underground and aboveground utilities, including water, sewer, storm, electrical, and communications systems. Collect accurate field data using Trimble GPS and robotic total station equipment. Work within the project RGK (project-specific coordinate/grid system) to ensure alignment with design and BIM models. Maintain detailed electronic field notes and well-organized data files for all survey activities. Upload, organize, and transfer survey data for office processing, analysis, and reporting. Support the preparation of as-built documentation and assist with basic QA/QC of collected data. Coordinate daily with survey leads, construction teams, and project management to confirm priorities and work plans. Identify and report discrepancies between design plans and installed field conditions. Follow all site safety requirements and best practices while working on an active construction site. Maintain and care for assigned survey equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability. Essential Skills At least 2 years of field surveying experience on construction or infrastructure projects. Hands-on experience with Trimble GPS and/or robotic total station equipment. Familiarity with as-built survey workflows and construction documentation processes. Understanding of RGK or other project-specific coordinate and grid systems. Ability to accurately collect, organize, and transfer field survey data. Strong attention to detail and a high level of commitment to data accuracy and quality. Ability to work independently and efficiently in a construction environment. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions on an active construction site. Valid driver's license. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on large, complex construction or data center projects. Comfort using survey data in coordination with design and BIM models. Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with survey leads and construction teams. Interest in learning new technologies and survey processes as part of a culture that encourages innovation. Desire for long-term career growth with opportunities to move into roles such as Crew Chief, which may include additional responsibilities and resources such as a work truck. Work Environment This position is based on a large data center project in the Saline, Michigan area during a heavy construction phase. The role is field-focused, with work performed outdoors on an active construction site in varying weather conditions. Typical work hours are 50-60 hours per week, with an expectation of approximately 10-hour days and some Saturdays as needed to meet project demands. During this project, the Survey Technician will remain on-site and will not be assigned a work truck; a vehicle may be provided in future roles such as a Crew Chief position. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saline, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
