Survey Technician Job Description Looking to start a career within the Survey space? This Survey Technician position supports an active as-built survey effort on a large data center project near Ann Arbor, Michigan. You will focus on field data collection, documentation, and reporting of installed utilities and site infrastructure using Trimble survey equipment and a project-specific local control grid (RGK). You will work under the guidance of a licensed Professional Surveyor and operate primarily in a construction environment, independently managing daily tasks while collaborating with survey leads and construction teams. This is a 9-12 month project-based role with the potential for long-term opportunities and progression into a Crew Chief position. Responsibilities Perform as-built survey data collection for underground and aboveground utilities, including water, sewer, storm, electrical, and communications systems. Collect accurate field measurements using Trimble GPS and robotic total station equipment. Work within the project-specific RGK coordinate/grid system to ensure alignment with design documents and BIM models. Maintain detailed electronic field notes and keep survey data files organized and up to date. Upload, organize, and transfer survey data for office-based processing, analysis, and reporting. Support the preparation of as-built documentation and assist with basic QA/QC checks on collected data. Coordinate daily with survey leads, construction teams, and project management to confirm priorities and work plans. Identify and report discrepancies between design plans and installed field conditions in a timely and accurate manner. Follow all site safety requirements and procedures while working in a heavy construction environment. Inspect, care for, and maintain assigned survey equipment to ensure reliability and accuracy. Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture by communicating effectively and sharing information as needed. Essential Skills Experience of field surveying experience on construction or infrastructure projects. Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, organize, and transfer field survey data. Strong attention to detail and a high level of commitment to data accuracy and quality. Ability to work outdoors in varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Valid driver's license. Comfort working independently in a construction environment while following direction from a licensed Professional Surveyor. Additional Skills & Qualifications Familiarity with BIM models and coordinating survey data with design models. Familiarity of working in a field setting Experience performing as-built surveys for utilities on large, complex sites. Used total station and GPS equipment from multiple manufacturers, including Trimble and Leica. Ability to collaborate with construction teams, project managers, and survey leads in a fast-paced project environment. Interest in leveraging new technologies and tools to improve survey workflows and data quality. Motivation to grow into higher-responsibility roles, including potential progression to a Crew Chief position. Work Environment This role is based on a large data center project in the Saline, Michigan area during a heavy construction phase. You will primarily work on-site, performing field surveys for 10-hour days, typically totaling 50-60 hours per week, with some Saturdays as needed. The work is outdoors in varying weather conditions and within an active construction environment that requires strict adherence to safety protocols. You will use Trimble GPS, robotic total stations, and related survey instruments, as well as electronic data collection and transfer tools. A dedicated work truck is not provided for this project since the work is site-based; however, there is potential to receive a work truck if you advance into a Crew Chief role on future projects.
