Job Description

Major Function The Construction Survey and CAD Technician is a project-based technical field position responsible for supporting heavy civil and heavy industrial construction operations through a combination of construction surveying, field layout, CAD/modeling, quantity takeoff, and machine control data management. This position is not required to be a licensed Professional Land Surveyor. Instead, the role is focused on translating contract drawings, design coordinates, CAD files, and 3D models into accurate field staking, layout, grade control surfaces, equipment control files, and construction progress quantities. The successful candidate must be highly capable in both the office and the field, with the ability to work directly with project management, field supervision, equipment operators, engineers, subcontractors, and client representatives. The initial assignment will be on a large project in the greater Lincoln, Nebraska area with an anticipated duration of approximately two years . Future project-based travel will be required based on company needs. Specific Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To Embrace Odin's Core Values in all aspects of the job. Support the Project Manager, Director of Project Engineering, and field operations team with construction survey, CAD, modeling, layout, and quantity tracking needs. Translate project drawings, design coordinates, CAD files, and construction models into accurate field staking and layout information. Perform construction layout and staking for earthwork, grading, utilities, drainage structures, concrete foundations, anchor bolts, paving, structural features, and other civil/industrial construction elements. Operate and manage survey equipment, including GPS rovers, robotic total stations, optical/total station equipment, and related data collectors. Work with Trimble surveying equipment , GPS-based systems, and optical/total station equipment; experience with Leica and/or Topcon equipment is also valued. Establish, maintain, and verify control points, benchmarks, layout points, lines, grades, elevations, and construction reference data. Prepare, upload, download, manage, and troubleshoot data files used by manual rovers, survey instruments, and equipment grade control systems. Establish and maintain 3D surfaces, models, alignments, corridors, and other construction data required for field layout and machine control. Support and manage data inputs/outputs for Trimble Earthworks and related equipment grade control systems. Prepare and manage machine control files for earthmoving, grading, paving, and related construction operations. Verify that field layout, grade control files, and model outputs conform to contract drawings, specifications, design intent, and approved revisions. Use Civil 3D, AGTEK, Bluebeam, Trimble systems, and related software to support construction layout, modeling, quantity calculations, and progress tracking. Generate earthwork models, cut/fill calculations, quantity takeoffs, progress quantities, and supporting exhibits. Calculate takeoffs and field progress quantities based on 3D models, field measurements, and project production data. Prepare maps, exhibits, sketches, plan markups, profiles, cross sections, and construction layout drawings as needed to support project execution. Review drawings, specifications, RFIs, sketches, redlines, design revisions, and other engineering data to determine field layout and model impacts. Maintain organized survey files, CAD files, model revisions, control data, field notes, staking reports, and quantity documentation. Lead, coordinate, and supervise rodmen, grade checkers, and other assigned field support personnel. Coordinate directly with superintendents, foremen, operators, project engineers, and project management to support daily field operations. Perform field verification of grades, elevations, locations, progress quantities, and completed work. Assist with as-built documentation, field measurements, and project closeout support. Support drone-based data collection, aerial mapping, progress documentation, and model verification where applicable. Identify potential layout conflicts, drawing discrepancies, constructability issues, or quantity concerns and communicate them promptly to the project team. Adhere to project safety requirements and ensure assigned survey/layout personnel work safely while performing field activities. Perform additional assignments and special projects as directed. Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications, and Experience Required High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of 5 years of experience performing construction survey, layout, CAD/modeling, machine control, or similar field engineering duties. Multiple years of experience in heavy civil, heavy industrial, power, energy, infrastructure, or large-scale site development construction strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience with Trimble, Leica, and/or Topcon survey equipment. Experience with both GPS-based survey equipment and optical/total station equipment required. Experience with Trimble Earthworks or similar equipment grade control systems. Proficiency with Civil 3D, AGTEK, Bluebeam, and Trimble survey/modeling workflows . Ability to read, interpret, and translate civil, structural, grading, drainage, utility, foundation, and paving drawings into field layout data. Ability to build, manage, and troubleshoot 3D surfaces, models, alignments, and machine control files. Ability to calculate earthwork, grading, paving, utility, and concrete-related quantity takeoffs. Ability to compare model-based quantities against field progress and assist with production tracking. Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Ability to supervise and direct rodmen, grade checkers, and field survey support personnel. Ability to communicate effectively with project management, engineering, field supervision, equipment operators, subcontractors, and client representatives. Ability to work independently while supporting a fast-paced project team. Valid driver's license required. FAA drone certification/license required. Preferred Professional Land Surveyor license or survey-related licensure in any state preferred but not required. Nebraska surveying license or related Nebraska credentials are a plus. Experience working on heavy industrial facilities, power generation sites, data center support infrastructure, large site development projects, or similar complex construction projects. Experience supporting construction equipment using GPS/machine control technology. Experience with drone mapping, aerial progress documentation, and model verification. Experience leading field survey/layout crews. Experience preparing as-built documentation, progress exhibits, and quantity backup for payment applications. Familiarity with USACE, utility, power, industrial, or major civil infrastructure project requirements is a plus. Licensing Clarification A Professional Land Surveyor license is not required for this position. This role is intended to support construction staking, layout, modeling, quantity tracking, and field engineering activities for active construction projects. The position is not intended to independently perform boundary surveys, prepare legal descriptions, certify plats, or provide licensed survey certifications unless the employee is properly licensed and authorized to do so under applicable law and company direction. Physical Demands Must be able to work in both office and active construction site environments. Must be able to stand, walk, climb, and traverse active construction sites, including uneven or rugged terrain, for extended periods. Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must be able to lift and carry survey equipment and related tools as needed. Must be able to use computers, tablets, data collectors, survey equipment, GPS rovers, total stations, radios, and standard office equipment. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with management, coworkers, field personnel, subcontractors, and client representatives. Must have good vision, hearing, and manual dexterity sufficient to perform survey, layout, CAD, and field documentation duties. Must wear all required Personal Protective Equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility apparel, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, and any additional project-required PPE. Work Environment This position will be primarily assigned to active construction projects and will involve a combination of field work, jobsite office work, CAD/modeling work, and coordination with project management and field operations. The initial project assignment is expected to be in the greater Lincoln, Nebraska area for approximately two years . The role is full-time and project-based. Travel to future Odin project locations will be required after completion of the initial assignment. Work hours may vary depending on project schedule, weather, production demands, and project deadlines. The current project schedule is expected to include 50-60 hours per week during summer and fall construction seasons, with anticipated reduction to approximately 40 hours per week during winter months.
