The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant, in a learning capacity, under close supervision of Senior Transportation Engineer Supervisor. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will support the deployment of new technology and assist staff in implementing improvements proposed by HQ (Headquarters) Division of Construction. This position is for SUMMER employment only with the possibility of employment being extended into the 2026-2027 school year. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. 62 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Strong deductive reasoning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accurate data entry abilities. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Willingness to learn and support technical tasks in a professional setting. Comfortable working in both office and field environments across varying weather conditions in Ventura, Los Angeles, and surrounding counties. Proficient with technology, including software and hardware systems. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 applications: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, and OneNote. Experience with databases such as Microsoft Access and Structured Query Language (SQL). Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products (Acrobat, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Firefly) and TechSmith Camtasia. Require coursework related to construction plans or the ability to interpret construction plans. Comfortable using Windows-based systems and managing multiple database platforms simultaneously. May be required to drive a state vehicle to and from field offices and project sites. Must have a valid California Driver's License. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Preferred experience with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) products (ArcGIS, Image Analyst, Experience Builder, Survey123), Smartsheet, Adobe Dreamweaver, and Drupal. Additional preference for candidates with or pursuing a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 certification for drone/Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) operation. Duties and Responsibilities In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in the deployment of new technology (software and hardware) to all Field Construction units covering all of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. This may be done in person (requiring travel to Construction Field offices within Ventura/Los Angeles County, utilizing a personal or occupying a state vehicle) or remotely. Provide support to staff regarding selecting database and software's used by District Division of Construction. Application development including programming in Python or SQL. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist users to resolve application related issues and document the resolution process for workforce development training. Compile resolutions into a cohesive set of instructions to assist in the training and adoption of newer technology for Statewide Construction staff. This may entail preparing basic instructions, capturing and/or editing pre-recorded video, script writing, storyboarding and/or PowerPoint generation. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in the administration and documenting of technical issues arising from the deployment and daily use of various Document Management Systems. They will assist in analyzing database statistics to determine where users are having workflow issues and mitigate the issues by generating training related deliverables for each user/Construction Field office. The student assistant will assist in writing documents such as reports, technical memos, requests and other correspondence. This also includes preparing meeting agendas, taking meeting notes, and other miscellaneous tasks. The student assistant will research best practices, policies and procedures and other guides related to technology adoption at various state Departments of Transportation. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in field reviews, when available, to assess site conditions, take measurements, take photographs, and/or collect other types of information. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist the unit supervisor regarding any ad-hoc Construction Engineering related issue on which the Department is focused. The student assistant may handle duties on behalf of other employees in the office that cannot or should not be delayed for an extended period. May perform duties as required.
