This role is essential in transforming field survey data into highly legible maps using modern CAD tools, while collaborating closely with project teams to ensure accuracy and compliance. The position is responsible for interpreting survey data, legal documents, deeds, and field notes, assisting with calculations and data validation, and producing maps, plats, and drawings using CAD tools. Ideal candidates bring a strong foundation in drafting principles and attention to detail. This position will be headquartered in Oakland, CA. The hiring pools established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any additional vacancies that may occur during the one-year life of the hiring pools.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Well-versed in AutoCAD Civil3D or a similar Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, and can produce accurate, detailed survey maps, construction drawings, and design plans. Possess a solid foundation in geometry, trigonometry, and basic engineering calculations to support survey work. Experienced in interpreting technical documents such as maps, plans, legal descriptions, and construction drawings. Experienced in researching and reviewing land surveying documents such as deeds, title reports, lease agreements, field notes, and record maps. Working knowledge of land surveying practices, including the use of survey instruments and data validation. Demonstrated strong attention to detail and can perform calculations and checks to ensure accuracy and precision in all work products. Capable of preparing a variety of technical drawings and visual materials, including profiles, cross sections, and presentation plans. Proficient with GIS applications. Proficient with standard office software and can manage databases, reports, and project documentation and communication effectively.

Essential Functions Maintains proficiency in automatic computer aided design (CAD or AutoCAD) for the creation of survey maps. Prepares and drafts maps, plan views, drawings, construction layout diagrams, plats, cross sections, profiles, tables, hard copy drawings and final maps using CAD. Interprets maps, plans, drawings, and diagrams. Assists in the preparation of reports and records keeping. Creates and updates databases and provides AutoCAD support. Makes site visits Makes perspective sketches and colored presentation plans using CAD or manual drafting Assists in the preparation of detailed contract bid documents. Assists in the performance of complex design calculations Performs related duties as assigned.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE SURVEY SUPPORT UNIT
Aids in both the office as a drafting technician and in the field as necessary for land survey work. Assists in the preparation and review of survey documentation products. Researches and reviews deeds, title reports, legal descriptions, lease agreements, field notes, maps and documents. Drafts and performs complex survey calculations and computations and checks data for accuracy. Makes field measurements and assists in the collection of field data through use of survey instruments. Assists with field survey operations and reviews construction plans for staking.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE DESIGN UNIT
Prepares drawings for site works and utilities including roads, trails and parking areas, drainage, water sewer, and power systems. Structures including buildings, bridges, and walls. Landscape construction including planting, irrigation, fencing and site furniture Drafting maps, plan views, elevation drawings, cross sections, profiles, tables and isometric drawings using CAD.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade,
AND Experience:
Two years of drafting experience in the field of civil engineering, landscape architecture, architecture, construction survey projects, and/or creating maps, legal descriptions and survey calculations using AutoCAD and related software.
Substitution :
College level education in computer aided design, surveying, engineering, architecture or a related field may be substituted on the basis of one year of completed college level education equating to one year of experience, up to a maximum of two years of experience.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, techniques and equipment used in drafting, including the use of AutoCAD for the creation of survey map. Principles and practices of construction, survey, landscape architecture and engineering algebra, geometry, trigonometry, construction and basic science as applied to surveying and drafting work. Various levels of accuracy and precision Tools to clear brush and set survey points. Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases..
Ability to:
Create and discern maps, plans and profiles, diagrams, tables, perspective sketches and various drawings. Use an array of survey instrumentation Choose the correct instruments to be used in surveys. Sketch accurately. Recognize hazards encountered in the field and take protective action and avoidance Prepare a materials quantity take off list from plans and working drawings. Visualize a completed detail and prepare an understandable working drawing. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers. East Bay Regional Parks Employees, Local 2428, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, represents this classification. Wages, hours, and other terms of conditions of employment are covered in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Park District and Local 2428. The probationary period for this classification is nine (9) months.
Internal Promotions:
Placement shall be made at the first step in the salary range for the new position (Step A) unless the salary rate at Step A of the new position is less than a 5% increase. In such instances, the employee will be placed at a step in the new salary range that ensures at least a 5% increase.
