Full-time Summary:
The Party Chief supervises and directs the operations of the survey field team in the execution of a wide range of surveying and mapping assignments for highway construction projects. The Party Chief is responsible for creating surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey tasks. S/he engages in the planning phase with supervisors, project managers, contractors, engineers, and local officials. S/he will provide technical information to Company supervisors and crews in regard to layouts and as-built information, and also train the survey crew on how to use surveying equipment and conduct proper mapping.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and participate in a variety of construction survey operations such as topography, leveling, design, as-built, and maintaining horizontal and vertical control networks utilizing a full range of survey equipment to perform field surveying for roadway, bridges, and other heavy highway construction projects.
  • Gather field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods; set up, adjust, and operate surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles.
  • Prepare and verify mathematical calculations related to surveying and basic engineering; compute and adjust angles, distances, bearings, traverses, and elevations; interpret and compute field data, and evaluate for accuracy and completeness; maintain accurate survey
  • and non-survey related records in the form of field notes, reports, and sketches; maintain vertical and horizontal control notes in files, field books, and computer.
  • Conduct project research, secure equipment, use safety techniques, perform the survey operation, handle the equipment, record data, and perform other associated duties for the purpose of delivering a successful project.
  • Provide work control lines and elevations that are required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials.
  • Track and maintain survey supplies such as stakes and marking equipment; ensure safety devices are present and in use as appropriate; may place traffic control devices and/or direct traffic.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records, logs, diaries, and/or other related documentation.
  • Assist with the evaluation of potential dimensions and other field problems; assist with conducting quantity calculations as required.
  • Analyze record data and communicate with utility companies to ensure proper surveying of public streets and easements; ensure data conforms to the design of the utility's infrastructure.
  • Attend field meetings with clients, government officials, inspectors, and other governing agencies.
  • Perform projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or its equivalent is preferred; additional course work in GIS, engineering technology, or mathematics.
  • Must be proficient in all aspects of road, highway, and bridge construction survey; DOT experience preferred.
  • 4+ years of construction survey-related experience.
  • Must be proficient in slope staking, fine grade staking, retaining wall layout, and in the layout of drainage structures and pipe.
Knowledge of:
principles and practices of construction surveying, including topographic surveying and GIS; field surveying practices and techniques; uses and capabilities of survey instruments, including total station, data collector, theodolites, network control stations, and GPA measuring equipment; laws, rules, and regulations regarding subdivisions of land, mapping, and surveying practices; technical report writing; and computer assisted surveying applications.
  • Preference given to those with experience using Trimble surveying equipment (using both GPS and Robotic equipment) and Trimble software (SCS900, Business Center, Terramodel), but other equipment and software experience is acceptable.
  • Familiarity with various CAD software and in-machine control set-up a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; very detail oriented and organized.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, take initiative, and problem solve while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions; function effectively as part of a team; ability to work under pressure; communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to travel on a regular basis; valid driver's license with a driving record that meets Company standards.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, but not required.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work and typical office equipment, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws, and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push, and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
