Job Description

at Farnsworth Group in Normal, Illinois, United States Job Description Farnsworth Group is seeking a Surveying Party Chief II in the posting location below. In this role, you will work in a collaborative capacity as an independent Party Chief (with limited supervision) in the training of junior staff members and in the planning, organizing, directing, and execution of various field activities associated with mapping the earth's surface. Projects will be in the areas of transportation, energy, land development, oil & gas, and construction.

Normal, IL What You'll Do:
Prepare clear, concise, and accurate field notes and sketches. Collect, process, reduce, and download surveying field data. Maintain surveying gear and company vehicles. Follow FGI Safety Protocols and complete daily Job Safety Assessments (JSA) Understand traffic control operations based on field activities. Communicate with field staff, CAD Technicians, and project managers daily. Operate, check, and make basic adjustments to robotic total stations, GPS equipment, data collectors, digital levels, metal detectors, tribrachs and tripods. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of principles for performing basic field activities such as topographic mapping, boundary corner recovery, public land surveys (PLSS), metes & bound surveys, construction surveys, energy projects, and aerial mapping. Research and interpret previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records relative to the conducting of field activities. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of various surveys (topographic mapping, boundary plats, highway plans, roadway stationing, plan & profile, cross sections, horizontal & vertical curves, construction drawings, as-built surveys, and pipeline plans. Maintain job-specific quality control metrics as defined in the quality manual. Other duties, as assigned.
What You'll Need:
Valid US driver's license & good driving record. High School diploma or equivalent. Ability to operate in a mentor/mentee team atmosphere. Proficient with GPS Systems, Robotic Total Stations, and Data Collectors. Safety-oriented mindset. Advanced understanding of metes & bounds or the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Ability to travel (approximately 80%).
Nice To Haves:
6+ years of previous surveying experience Advanced knowledge of Trimble surveying instruments & data collectors Previous safety training (OSHA, First-Aid, Confined Space) Surveyor-in-Training (LSI, LSIT, SIT) certification AutoCAD C3D and/or MicroStation ORD experience Aerial Drone and/or 3D laser scanning experience Advanced understanding of point code-driven linework & construction staking Complete math skills, including trigonometry, geometry, algebra, surveying coordinates, and surveying computations.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
Primarily a field position, working outside in varying site conditions. Requires the ability to work in various terrain & weather conditions and recognize safety hazards. Requires lifting, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, standing, climbing, pushing, pulling, hammering, digging, and other physical activities. Requires the ability to safely operate and drive company vehicles.
