Uses global positioning system (GPS) and global information system (GIS) technology to make measurements. May specialize in measurements to determine airspace boundaries; may conduct marine or hydrographic surveys to measure bodies of water and determine shorelines and water flow and depth.
Job Overview We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated Land Surveying Crew Chief to lead our field operations. In this role, you will manage a field crew to execute boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, and construction staking surveys. You will operate advanced survey instrumentation, maintain rigorous data accuracy, and ensure field operations run safely and on schedule. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver with strong field leadership skills and deep technical expertise.
Core Responsibilities Lead Field Crews :
Direct daily field operations, delegate tasks to field technicians, and ensure maximum productivity on-site.
Execute Varied Surveys :
Conduct boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, right-of-way, and utility location surveys.
Perform Construction Staking :
Layout precise coordinates for utilities, roadways, buildings, and grading projects.
Operate Advanced Hardware :
Utilize robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors, and automatic levels.
Collect & Verify Data :
Capture field data, download files, and write clear, legible field notes.
Research & Recover Evidence :
Search for and locate property corners, monuments, and survey control points using historical records.
Maintain Safety Standards :
Enforce company safety policies, wear required PPE, and safely manage work zones near traffic. Care for

Calibrate instrumentation, manage vehicle inventory, and keep equipment secure and clean
Experience :
Minimum of 3-5 years of land surveying experience, with at least 1-2 years serving in a Crew Chief or lead capacity.
Technical Proficiency :
Mastery of modern survey instruments (e.g., Trimble, Leica, Topcon) and electronic data collectors.
Physical Stamina :
Ability to walk long distances, carry heavy equipment, and work outdoors in all weather conditions and terrains.
Licensing :
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory. LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) certification is a strong plus.
Ability to train, mentor, and motivate field technicians while maintaining high standards.
Communication Skills :
Clear verbal communication to interface with clients, landowners, and office engineers.
Critical Thinking :
Sharp spatial awareness and real-time problem-solving skills to handle anomalies discovered in the field.
Pay:
$70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
