Job Title:
Land Survey Crew Chief Job Description We are seeking an experienced Land Surveyor / Crew Chief to lead a crew on projects throughout the Southeastern region. This role is based out of our Wilmington office and supports projects around the coast of North Carolina. The individual in this position will work both independently and as a leader of a small team, primarily with a crew of two. The major objectives include ensuring quality, accuracy, clarity, compliance with regulatory requirements, public relations, safety, and meeting schedules within budgets, while providing responsive service to clients. Responsibilities + Locate, review, and research job locations to identify landmarks, physical objects, and significant land changes affecting surveys. + Supervise the work of the survey crew, evaluate priorities, and coordinate and organize work efforts. + Ensure work performed meets required standards and derive necessary field calculations. + Supervise maintenance of instruments and equipment. + Ensure collected data is accurate and conforms to regulations and standards. + Coordinate findings with engineering personnel, clients, and others involved in projects. + Research previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and records for necessary data. + Determine methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control. + Maintain accurate notes, records, and sketches of work performed. + Complete daily logs and expense reports. + Complete safety forms and ensure all crew members adhere to safety procedures. + Consult with computer operators and review final production of work performed. + Familiarity with commonly used surveying terms and proficient in using and caring for survey tools and equipment. + Operate survey equipment such as Total Station/Data Collector, Level, and various GPS methods. Essential Skills + 3+ years of progressive experience in survey field operations, with at least 2 years as an Instrument Operator. + Proficiency with survey equipment, including total stations, data collectors, and GPS equipment. + Good technical skills with a process-oriented, analytical, and detail-oriented approach. + Ability to work independently and as part of a team. + Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Behavioral traits such as being steady, helpful, problem-solving, methodical, consistent, and precise. + Familiarity with land surveying, construction stakeouts, topographic surveys, and hydro surveys. + Willingness to travel, with some overnight travel required. Work Environment This position is based in Wilmington, NC, with the majority of time spent in the field. The role may require travel within the region (NC, SC, VA), with compensation and accommodation provided for overnight stays. The primary workload is within a daily commute, but travel expectation is approximately 60%. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilmington, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
