The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities. Job Summary This position is remote and will work from a home or DLI office location within the state of Minnesota. This position leads others and provides for services in the enforcement, through inspection, of the provisions contained in the State Building Code for public buildings, state licensed facilities, and Places of Public Accommodation that are to be constructed in areas of the state where the building code will not be administered by a local building official and where delegation has not been granted to the local building official. This position provides support to all seven regions across the state and may require periodic, sometimes significant, travel. The assignment of specific projects or a designated geographic region—based on the successful applicant's home office—will be determined by the agency's operational needs. Because these needs may change over time, the position must remain flexible and adapt as directed by the supervisor. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Must be certified as a Building Official by the State of Minnesota. Must have at least four (4) years of experience applying the principles, practices and methods of building construction and building codes as demonstrated in building code administration; review and approval or disapproval of building plans; and conducting building inspections to determine compliance with Minnesota building codes. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department staff, government, industry, and the general public. Written and verbal communications skills. Conflict resolution skills, and ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations that are encountered in work assignments. Ability to travel in-state and out-state, as necessary. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, who do not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or other common experiences. Preferred Qualifications Experience as a designated municipal building official. Experience inspecting NFPA 13 and associated fire suppression systems. Language skills other than English (such as Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL). Additional Requirements It is the policy that all final candidates submit to a background investigation prior to employment. The background check may consist of the following components: SEMA4 Records Check, Employment Reference Check, Criminal History Check, Driver's License Check, Social Security and Address Verification, Conflict of Interest Review, Education/License Verification.
