Job Description

Missions of Incumbent:
1. Assess the status of the 500 acre Green Forest Sanctuary in the western Baraboo Hills based against the long term objective, the 10 year plan, and the Annual Work Plan. 2. Assure that planned work is accomplished by the Land Steward(s) and any contractor. 3. Lead the review and creation of Annual Work Plans and 10 yr Plans. 4. Following Key Results:
Office computer tasks: Prepare the Annual Work Plan based on site inspections and input from the Land Steward before the work season begins (typically 1 February), Discuss the Annual Work Plan with the Land Steward(s) and the Board representative to get their inputs, and provide training and additional resources for the Land Steward as needed to accomplish the Annual Work Plan. Typically 2 hours annually.. Be available to answer Land Steward's questions as needed. Commonly by phone or online meeting. Approve Land Steward time sheets and update work hours on the Annual Work Plan. Review and approve invoices for field work expenses incurred. Update the GIS map as needed. Typically all this takes 15 to 30 minutes twice a month. Recommend to hire and fire Land Steward(s). For new hires additional training duties will be required and that time will be separately compensated. Renew the 10 year plan based on personal observation, input from other knowledgeable restoration practitioners, skilled Board members, and the Land Steward(s). The 10 year plan is typically a 1 page document describing the present condition of the sanctuary and what its condition will be 10 years from now. The 10 year plan lists major changes to be accomplished and major practices to be maintained. It is written once each decade. Present an annual report to the Board and other stakeholders which typically consists of the Annual Work Plan showing what was completed and what was not completed, as well as actual vs budget. In addition, attach a one page highlight of accomplishments for the year's work and an assessment of progress toward the 10 year plan. Present the upcoming year's Annual Work Plan highlights. Onsite field work Typically 4 to 5 visits per year April thru October Inspect the work of the Land Steward(s) during the year as needed to assure work is proceeding per plan and work is being accomplished satisfactorily. Typically this is four or five onsite visits with the Land Steward during the active season-- April through October. However, more time may be needed for training the Land Steward(s). (see estimated time required). Optionally and If needed, conduct burns i.e. act as the burn boss. The Land Steward(s) are responsible for burn prep, crew recruitment, burn permits, and burn equipment maintenance. It is intended for the Land Steward to be certified as burn boss. Conducting burns would be additionally compensated. Additional Reporting Bimonthly discuss progress and any issues with the Board representative during the work season. Document all Land Steward disciplinary or performance discussions. Seek approval from the Board representative for purchases over the threshold amount set by the Board. Typically these are capital purchases. Conduct an annual performance & development review with the Land Steward(s). Minimum 5 year of planning and assessment of oak woodland and oak savanna communities. Field tech level experience does not qualify.
