The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Design & Engineering Services, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:

Engineering Assistant 1: $32.78 Hourly Engineering Assistant 2: $37.78 Hourly Engineering Assistant 3: $43.19 Hourly What you will be doing: You'll work with a passionate team and have direct input on projects that matter to Alaskans. This position offers variety—field studies, design reviews, public engagement, and collaboration with engineers and planners statewide. Examples of specific work tasks includes: Conducting speed studies to identify safety improvement options Reviewing capital plans for safety upgrades such as traffic signals, roundabouts, school zones, and signing and striping. Collaborating with agencies and communities on capital project scope development such as School District requests for Safe Routes to School and Alaska Railroad at-grade crossing upgrades. Field evaluations of safety systems including traffic safety corridors audits, road safety audits, fatal crash site reviews. This position will work with many functional groups to assist in capital and operational challenges as they arise, while also providing safety input on future planning. Collaboration is imperative in every task—you'll work closely with engineers, planners, maintenance crews, and external partners to improve how the surface transportation system operates for all users. You will use new technologies to communicate including tools like ARCGIS, AI, crash portals, and permit systems. Although this position is based in Anchorage with occasional travel for field reviews, Central Region responsibilities cover West to Bethel, South to Homer, and North to Houston.

A valid Driver's License is preferred but not essential. Engineer-in-training certification or passing of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is preferred but not essential. An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree. An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination. AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:

Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Special Note:

The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions. Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior. Engineering Assistant 3 Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by

ABET. AND

Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by

ABET. AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:

Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree. Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month). FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. It may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1 , Engineering Assistant 2 , or Engineering Assistant 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
