Transportation Engineer I:
Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer II:
Performs [complex] transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.[Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor].
Transportation Engineer III:
Performs [advanced] and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Transportation Engineer IV:
Performs [highly] advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials andprivate entities. [Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product].The essential duties for the Transportation Engineer I include:

Assists Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and/or procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectivesAssists project managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines.

Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, Administration, the FHWA, contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers and local entities.

Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.

Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PE&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.

Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.

Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.

Represent the district / division at various meetings.

Reviews designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.

Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional duties for Transportation Engineer II include:

Develops design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence.

Develops specifications for special bridge design details and projects.

Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.

Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.

Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.

Schedules, assigns and oversees bridge inspection activities.

Trains engineering staff.

Coordinates and/or monitors, assigned projects/programs/plans.

Designs complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.

May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.

Designs highly complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.

Evaluates and makes recommendation for developing, monitoring, and updating integrated project plans and schedules so that projects may be executed in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.

Assists districts with bridge inspection-related projects.

Assists in developing and/or monitoring budgets.

Develops, recommends, and implements modifications as necessary for continual improvement to existing program of responsibility.

Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.

Ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.

Makes presentations and represents TxDOT. Additional duties for Transportation Engineer IV include:

Coordinates and/or monitors consultant contracts related projects.

Performs highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.

Responsible for all design and plan preparation for the district's Central Design Section.

May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage. Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans.

Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.

Performs inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
