401(k) 401(k) matching Dental insurance Health insurance Paid time off Vision insurance Job Summary Plant Design I/O is seeking an Instrument & Controls P&ID Validation Specialist to support the verification and validation of instrumentation and control information associated with a client P&ID walkdown project. This position will review the work completed by the P&ID walkdown team and validate instrumentation, control, and safety system information against available facility documentation and control systems. The ideal candidate has previous experience as an Instrument Technician or in a similar industrial instrumentation role and possesses a strong practical understanding of field instrumentation, control loops, process controls, and industrial facilities. This position will use that experience to identify discrepancies between P&IDs, field observations, the Distributed Control System (DCS), safety systems, and other instrumentation and controls documentation. This is a technical individual-contributor position and does not include personnel management or team leadership responsibilities. Responsibilities Review P&ID walkdown markups and field documentation for instrumentation and control-related information. Validate instrument tags, instrument types, control valves, control loops, signals, and associated P&ID symbology. Review DCS information to verify instruments, control loops, process indications, alarms, and control functions represented on the P&IDs. Review Safety Instrumented System (SIS) and other safety system information to validate safety-related instrumentation, trips, interlocks, permissives, and shutdown functions. Compare P&ID information against available instrument indexes, I/O information, loop documentation, datasheets, cause-and-effect documentation, and other applicable instrumentation and controls documentation. Apply practical instrumentation experience to identify information that appears incomplete, inconsistent, or incorrect. Identify discrepancies between field observations, P&IDs, instrumentation documentation, DCS information, and safety system information. Clearly document discrepancies and provide the information necessary for corrections to be incorporated into P&ID updates. Identify conditions requiring additional field verification and communicate those requirements to the P&ID walkdown team. Work with the P&ID Walkdown Lead and client instrumentation, controls, operations, and engineering personnel to resolve conflicting or incomplete information. Verify corrected P&ID information to ensure identified instrumentation and controls discrepancies have been appropriately addressed. Maintain organized and traceable records of validation activities, discrepancies, and resolutions. Follow all client site safety, security, engineering, and documentation requirements. Requirements Previous experience as an Instrument Technician or in a comparable industrial instrumentation and controls role. Strong practical knowledge of industrial instrumentation and process control systems. Experience reading and interpreting Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). Experience working with common process instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurement. Experience with control valves, switches, transmitters, analyzers, and other common field instrumentation. Working knowledge of instrument loops and the relationship between field instrumentation and control systems. Experience working with or navigating Distributed Control System (DCS) information. Familiarity with industrial safety systems, shutdown systems, interlocks, and associated field instrumentation. Ability to identify and understand instrument tags, loop numbers, equipment identifiers, and common ISA-style instrumentation symbols. Ability to compare information from multiple technical sources and identify discrepancies. Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical accuracy. Ability to clearly document findings and communicate technical questions and discrepancies. Ability to work on-site in an operating industrial facility and comply with all applicable client safety and security requirements. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of experience as an Instrument Technician or in a closely related instrumentation and controls position. Experience in chemical, petrochemical, refining, energy, manufacturing, or other process industry facilities. Experience working with DCS platforms such as Honeywell, Emerson, Yokogawa, ABB, Siemens, or similar systems. Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), safety PLCs, or Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems. Familiarity with instrument indexes, I/O lists, loop diagrams, cause-and-effect matrices, logic diagrams, and instrument datasheets. Experience troubleshooting or commissioning instrumentation and control loops. Experience performing P&ID walkdowns, drawing verification, as-built verification, or similar facility documentation activities. NCCER Instrumentation certification, ISA certification, technical degree, apprenticeship, or other relevant instrumentation training. What Success Looks Like Instrumentation and controls information identified during P&ID walkdowns is thoroughly and accurately reviewed. Instrument tags, instrument types, control functions, loops, and safety-related instrumentation are accurately represented within the defined project scope. DCS and safety system information is effectively used to identify and resolve discrepancies in P&ID information. Differences between field conditions, P&IDs, instrumentation documentation, and control systems are clearly identified and documented. Items requiring additional field investigation are returned to the walkdown team with clear information regarding what needs to be verified. Technical assumptions are avoided, and conflicting or incomplete information is appropriately escalated for resolution. Validation records are organized and traceable so that P&ID changes can be supported by the underlying verification information. Work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with client standards and project requirements. We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.
