Job Title:
Commissioning Engineer - Substation Protection & Controls Job Description We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to lead and document commissioning activities for utility substations and protection & control systems. This role is responsible for planning, executing, troubleshooting, and validating all phases of commissioning—from pre‑construction through energization and project close‑out—while ensuring safety, accuracy, and compliance with all client and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities Plan, coordinate, perform, and document all commissioning phases including pre‑commissioning, construction support, testing, energization, and project close‑out for protection, control, and power systems. Review wiring diagrams, schematics, and engineering documents in preparation for outages and commissioning activities. Perform troubleshooting and problem analysis on protection and control systems and substation equipment, including: drawing and wiring errors, settings issues, questionable test results, equipment malfunctions, and battery ground faults. Participate in project meetings such as kickoff, planning, progress, and lessons‑learned reviews. Prepare daily, weekly, and final commissioning reports detailing progress, testing results, issues identified, and recommendations. Assist in developing project‑specific commissioning plans, energization plans, and testing documentation. Identify risks associated with utility systems and equipment; develop Site Risk Assessments and ensure safe isolation and restoration procedures. Ensure all required tests and commissioning steps are completed, recorded, and validated in accordance with project requirements. Develop and/or review detailed test reports for various types of electrical equipment. Qualifications 5+ years of experience in testing and commissioning (Utility experience preferred; candidates with commissioning experience in complex industrial or commercial systems will be considered). Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, manufacturer schematics, AC/DC diagrams, one‑line and three‑line diagrams. Foundational knowledge of protection systems, relay communication, and substation equipment—or ability to learn quickly with guidance. Prior exposure to medium and high‑voltage substation or power‑plant equipment preferred; ability to perform basic apparatus testing with supervision. Familiarity with commissioning methods for protection and control circuits and ability to document commissioning activities accurately. Experience with testing software such as Doble Protection Suite, ProTest, SEL AcSELerator, or Enoserv RTS is highly preferred. Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. and possess a valid driver's license in good standing. Ability to travel out of town for extended periods as required. Ability to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface professionally with clients and internal teams. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $65.00 - $80.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
