Job Description

This is skilled work in operating various light and heavy equipment and trucks in constructing and maintaining City streets, drainage infrastructure, and other City-owned facilities. The work involves safely operating assigned equipment and performing related manual tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisor and is reviewed through inspection of work while in progress and upon completion. This position is for the Lakes and Stormwater Flusher Truck Operator. Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in loading, hauling, and unloading various equipment, materials, and supplies. Operates a lowboy to transport equipment and supplies. Operates front-end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, slope mowers, all-terrain mowers, mower max, steel wheel rollers, traffic rollers, jackhammers, and various other pieces of equipment when building or maintaining streets and drainage facilities. Operates street sweepers and vacuum trucks. Performs manual labor in assisting crews in streets and drainage-related activities. Performs pre and post-trip inspections of equipment. Makes minor repairs to equipment assigned. Operates other pieces of light, medium, or heavy equipment or trucks in the absence of highly skilled equipment operators under the direct supervision of a qualified operator. Assists in installing and maintaining traffic control devices, including flagging traffic as needed. Must be available for emergency call-out as needed. May be required to participate and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements. May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department. Position is designated as Mission Critical.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related work as required. High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED. Six months of experience operating various construction and maintenance equipment. Must possess and maintain a Class "A" or "B"
CDL. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must maintain a valid telephone number. Must be able to obtain a tanker endorsement as required by the employing department within six months of employment. Knowledge of traffic regulations and the practices followed in the care and safe operation of various construction equipment and trucks. Knowledge of motor equipment operation principles sufficient to detect any defective operation. Ability to perform manual labor related to municipal projects. Ability to service a motor vehicle and to make minor running repairs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the general public.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires heavy work that involves lifting, shoveling, walking, or standing most of the time, carrying 35 to 100 pounds regularly, and exerting up to 100 pounds of force frequently. The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, wet/humid conditions, disease, pathogens, extreme noise levels, traffic, toxic/caustic chemicals, fumes, noxious odors, moving machinery, heights, dusts, pollen, and extreme heat/cold. The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception. The job may require work in confined spaces. All City of Lakeland positions are subject to testing (e.g. written, oral, performance, computerized, interview, and/or any combination).
