This role analyzes drawings, specifications, and scope documents to develop detailed material, labor, and subcontractor pricing while supporting project planning, risk assessment, and bid strategy. The Estimator works closely with engineering, project management, fabrication, and operations teams to ensure estimates reflect real-world execution and industry requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare detailed cost estimates for metal fabrication, process piping, structural steel, and food processing construction projects. Review drawings, specifications, RFQs, and contract documents to understand full project scope and requirements. Perform material takeoffs and labor calculations using historical data and production rates. Solicit, evaluate, and level vendor and subcontractor quotes. Develop pricing for equipment, fabrication, installation, freight, taxes, and contingencies. Identify project risks, scope gaps, and value-engineering opportunities. Collaborate with engineering and operations to validate constructability and fabrication assumptions. Support bid reviews, handoff meetings, and project transitions to operations and project management. Maintain estimating databases, cost models, and historical project data. Assist with change order pricing and budget updates as projects progress.
Required Qualifications:
Experience estimating in metal fabrication, industrial construction, or process equipment installation. Working knowledge of fabrication methods, welding processes, piping systems, and installation practices. Ability to read and interpret mechanical, structural, and piping drawings. Strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills. Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and takeoff tools. Effective communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in food processing, food production, or other regulated industrial environments. Familiarity with sanitary design requirements and hygienic construction standards. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (preferred). Experience with design-build or EPC project delivery models. Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (OSHA, ASME, AWS, FDA/USDA as applicable).
Core Competencies:
Cost estimating and analysis. Attention to detail and accuracy. Risk assessment and problem-solving. Collaboration and communication. Time management and prioritization.
Work Environment:
This position is primarily office-based with regular interaction with the shop, engineering team, and project managers. Occasional travel to job sites or vendor facilities may be required.
About Steelial Constructions & Metal Fabrication:
In 1997, Steelial was established because our founder, Larry A. Hedrick Jr., saw an opportunity. After noticing a need in the food production industry, he decided he wanted to make an impact on food production manufacturing by offering high-quality services, engineering, and manufacturing. After seeing success in this field, he decided to expand to mechanical installation, process engineering, and project engineering and management.
