Immediately Job Description Exceptional Children (EC) & Middle School ELA Teacher Job Description Macon County Schools Position Summary The EC & Middle School ELA Teacher provides both standards-based English Language Arts instruction and specialized instruction for students with disabilities in grades 6-8. This position integrates the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (ELA) with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to ensure students with disabilities have access to the general curriculum in the least restrictive environment. The teacher supports academic achievement, literacy development, and social-emotional growth while ensuring compliance with IDEA and NCDPI policies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Plan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (ELA) for middle grades Develop students' skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use Provide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities based on IEP goals and needs Adapt and modify ELA curriculum to ensure access and progress for diverse learners Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA and
NCDPI EC
policies Collect, analyze, and maintain data on student progress toward IEP goals Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of Exceptional Children (EC), English learners (EL), and other diverse learners Provide accommodations and modifications in classroom instruction and assessments Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and co-teaching models Work with related service providers (e.g., speech, occupational therapy, school psychologists) to support student needs Implement and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and support positive behavior strategies Create a structured, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment Assess student learning using formative and summative methods and use data to guide instruction Maintain accurate records of grades, progress monitoring, and EC documentation Participate in and facilitate IEP meetings, including annual reviews and reevaluations Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding academic progress and IEP services Integrate instructional technology and assistive technology to support student learning Promote literacy skills, critical thinking, and independence Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and professional development Ensure compliance with all state and federal timelines, documentation, and procedural safeguards Follow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectations Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to equity and inclusion Perform other duties as assigned by school administration Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of middle school ELA content and instructional practices Knowledge of special education law (IDEA) and
