401(k) Safe Harborwithemployermatch, Health, dental, andvision coverage, PTO and paidholidays, Professional development support About the Organization Boulder Biologics Research Center (BBRC) is a startup medical research and clinical organization focused on building a next-generation cellular therapy platform. The organization operates at the intersection of clinical care, laboratory processing, and systematic, scalable operational infrastructure, with an emphasis on autologous cellular therapies. BBRC is in an early-stage build phase. This is not a maintenance environment-it is a foundational build requiring disciplined execution, strong operational systems, and the ability to scale a laboratory-supported organization within a regulated clinical and research setting. Position Overview The Executive Director serves as the senior business and administrative executive responsible for building and managing the operational infrastructure that supports the cellular therapy laboratory. This is a business and administrative leadership role. It is not a scientific, clinical, or laboratory operations leadership position. The Executive Director ensures that the laboratory is properly staffed, supplied, financially managed, and operationally disciplined on a daily basis. This includes ownership of purchasing, budgeting, vendor management, human resources, and administrative systems. This role is comparable to a hospital laboratory administrator or operational executive responsible for ensuring that technical and clinical teams can execute without disruption. The Executive Director operates in a hands-on capacity within a startup environment , directly solving operational challenges and building the systems required for consistent execution. Core Accountability The Executive Director is accountable for: Ensuring the laboratory is staffed, supplied, and operationally ready each day from a business and administrative standpoint Maintaining budget discipline and accurate expense tracking aligned with Board-approved financial plans Enforcing administrative discipline, including scheduling reliability and operational consistency Managing vendor relationships and ensuring consistent delivery of materials and services Building and maintaining scalable business and administrative systems Supporting nonprofit governance and compliance through coordination with external partners Ensuring administrative alignment with applicable quality and regulatory requirements Key Responsibilities Operational Readiness & Administrative Discipline Ensure the laboratory is prepared for daily operations from a business and administrative standpoint Confirm required supplies, materials, and services are available for scheduled activities Monitor non-technical staff scheduling, attendance, and reliability Identify and resolve operational gaps that could disrupt execution Actively address day-to-day operational issues in a hands-on manner Purchasing & Vendor Management Procure laboratory supplies, reagents, equipment, and services in coordination with technical and quality leadership Establish and manage vendor relationships Negotiate pricing, contracts, and delivery timelines Ensure continuity of supply and service delivery Coordinate with Quality where vendor activities intersect with compliance requirements Budgeting & Expense Management Develop and manage the operating budget for Board review and approval Track expenses in coordination with CPA and bookkeeping partners Monitor spending trends and identify cost efficiencies Maintain clear financial visibility and reporting for leadership Resource Planning (Non-Technical) Anticipate supply, equipment, and service needs based on operational demand Coordinate procurement timelines with laboratory requirements Ensure uninterrupted availability of critical resources Human Resources & Administrative Management Manage hiring logistics, onboarding, and personnel administration for non-technical roles Maintain HR records and ensure compliance with policies Coordinate payroll, benefits, and administrative processes Support accountability and performance management from an operational standpoint Nonprofit Administration & Governance Coordinate with external CPA, bookkeeping, and legal advisors Support Board reporting and administrative processes Ensure compliance with nonprofit reporting requirements Maintain organized organizational records and documentation Business Systems & Infrastructure Build and maintain systems for: Expense tracking Vendor management Administrative documentation Ensure processes are structured, scalable, and repeatable Support continuous improvement of operational infrastructureRole Boundaries The Executive Director:
Does not make scientific, clinical, or laboratory workflow decisions Does not override Technical or Quality authority Is responsible for enabling execution-not directing technical work However, the Executive Director must develop a strong working understanding of laboratory operations in order to effectively support planning, resource allocation, and operational execution. Required Qualifications Education (Minimum) Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related discipline Preferred Education MBA, MHA, or similar advanced degree in business or healthcare administration Experience Experience in business operations, administration, or financial management Experience managing budgets, vendors, and operational systems Experience operating in a startup or build environment strongly preferred Familiarity with healthcare, laboratory, or life sciences environments preferred Core Capabilities Strong operational and financial management skills High level of organizational discipline and attention to detail Ability to build structure and enforce accountability Ability to manage multiple functions simultaneously Strong communication and cross-functional coordination skills Willingness to operate hands-on in a dynamic startup environment Preferred Background Experience supporting regulated or technical environments Exposure to healthcare, laboratory, or life sciences organizations Experience working with external service providers (CPA, legal, HR) Familiarity with nonprofit structures or governance Role Characteristics Business and administrative leadership focus High accountability for operational readiness and execution Hands-on role in a startup environment Structured, process-driven mindset Focus on consistency, reliability, and scalability Designed to support-not replace-technical and clinical leadershipSimilar remote jobs
