Job Description
Towne and Country Animal Clinic is growing! We are a well-established veterinary hospital located in Fairborn, OH. We are looking for a Veterinary Assistant to join our team providing superior medical and environmental care for the animals staying at our facility. Compassionate care towards our patients is our highest priority. We are looking for an experienced Assistant for to join us part time, to eventually become full time. For the summer the schedule would vary and would help to cover staff vacations and fluctuations in doctors scheduling. In the fall, there will be an opportunity for increased hours. Experience with exotics or large animal is a plus! The Veterinary Assistant primary role is to assist the Veterinarian and RVT in medical support and plays a vital role in achieving greater efficiency in overall patient care within the practice. The Veterinary Assistant will apply their skills to assist in monitoring surgeries, dental cleaning, diagnostic imagery, laboratory testing, patient nursing care, administering medication, and client education. The Veterinary Assistant will assist the RVT with procedures such as suture removal, nail trims, vaccine administration and lab work when a doctor exam is not required. Veterinary Assistants must enjoy working with animals along with people and value the care provided at TCAC. The right person for this role will have good interpersonal skills and promote a positive work environment. This role is fast-paced and often requires significant communication and multi-tasking.
Reporting:
This position reports to the Veterinarians, RVT and Medical Coordinator Primary Job Responsibilities Learning & Team Building- Promote a positive attitude and demonstrate a commitment to the practice philosophy.
- Make suggestions for how to improve practice protocols.
- Attend in office education opportunities to build a knowledge base of products and procedures. Clinical Nursing Care
- Create estimates and effectively communicate in detail to clients.
- Use skills to assist the veterinarian with outpatient and surgical care
- Assist in performing common outpatient procedures (microchips, nail trims, ear cleanings, anal gland expression etc.)
- Monitor changes in patients' conditions including pain levels, vomit, blood, urine and feces in the cage, and clean patients and cages as needed. Alert the veterinarian to significant changes.
- Recognize patients with potentially contagious diseases and follow isolation procedures.
- Safely and humanely restrain patients.
- Assist with humane euthanasia as requested.
- Manage emergency patient care alerting veterinarian.
- Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed.
- Administer Sub-Q fluids and use IV pumps according to the veterinarian.
- Update and maintain accurate and legally defensible records including reminders, conversations, histories, weights, and vital signs.
- Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthesia machines, cardiac monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working order.
- Effectively communicate with other staff using thorough chart notation
- Educate and communicate with owners in a compassionate, tactful, and professional manner.
- Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations to answer client question, educate on vaccines, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention and assist in marketing veterinary service that benefit the patient such as spay and neuters, dental cleanings, senior wellness exams, boarding and grooming services.
- Perform client callbacks daily.
- Maintain inventory of supplies
- Fill prescriptions per veterinarians' instructions; double-check for accuracy; have another employee sign (two signatures on each prescription that leaves our hospital).
- Assist in care if boarding pets and the kennel staff.
Laboratory :
- Perform medical diagnostics and evaluate for proper positioning and exposure using a range of equipment including electrocardiograph, radiograph, ultrasound, thermal imaging, laser and soundwave therapy. Adhere to all safety standards.
- Perform in-hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for reference labs.
- Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures.
- Report laboratory testing to the veterinarian in a timely manner
- Complete proper sample preparation and paperwork for the laboratory
- Clean and maintain equipment. Anesthesia and Surgical Assistance
- Schedule surgical procedures and communicate to clients any prep work required. Maintain surgery log
- Admit patients for scheduled anesthesia procedures and drop off procedures.
- Prepare patients, surgical suite and instruments in collaboration with other techs and assistants.
- Monitor and maintain anesthetized patients by observation/manual parameters and by use of vital signs equipment.
- Maintain oxygen supply, check oxygen lines, and waste gas scavenger system; turn off scavenger system after surgical procedures are completed.
- Monitor patient's post-op and update client upon recovery.
- Prepare proper surgical discharge and post-surgical instructions for each patient.
- Properly clean, prepare and sterilize surgical suite, equipment, and instruments.
- Keep surgical materials stocked; prepare gown and surgical packs.
- Keep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical records.
- Accurately record all medications and injections given.
- Prepare bills in a timely manner.
- Ensure all surgery and hospital patients go home in the proper medical state and clean. Dental
- Assist/perform routine dental scaling, polishing and fluoride. Recognize and bring to the veterinarian's attention any abnormalities.
- Perform dental charting and document in the medical record.
- Take before and after photos for clients.
- Communicate with client providing updates and advise pick up time or when to call back. Regulatory Tasks
- Perform laboratory, treatment and surgical inventory maintenance as requested.
- Receive deliveries. Check contents of the deliveries against invoices and immediately note package shortages or damaged shipments as necessary. Invoices are filed in office.
- Notify office manager of any new items brought into clinic to maintain proper SDS requirements. Follow proper protocols.
- Ensure that working areas are clean and stocked with appropriate supplies.
- Complete closing checklist for laboratory, treatment, imaging, and surgery daily.
- Discard syringes, vials, and containers in appropriate containers
- Maintain properly marked and labels secondary labeling and appropriate signage.
- Be knowledgeable of federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA.
