Job Description

H-2A and corresponding domestic workers must be available to perform each of the following job activities in connection with the harvesting and farming operations:
Farmworker/Harvester:
Lettuce (Romaine, Iceberg, Spring Mix, Green Leaf
  • Leafy Crops / Leafy Greens), Planting, Growing, Irrigators, Weeding, Cooler-Packing Facility, Prepare freshly harvested crop for shipment, General Farm Labor / General Ranch Maintenance, Forklift Drivers, Tractor Drivers to perform the following duties: Perform manual labor to prepare fields for planting and harvesting of leafy and vegetable crops
  • lettuce of various leaf varieties and other leafy greens.
Workers must till soil, weed, plant, and clean farm areas; perform seed treatment; harvest; participate in irrigation activities, set up / operate irrigation equipment, clear and maintain irrigation ditches. General farm labor will include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach and operate farm implements/tractors/forklifts/equipment/machinery to till soil, plant, space, cultivate, treat seeds, fertilize, weed, thin, and prune/crop plots. Workers may also make minor mechanical adjustments, repairs, and maintenance of farm machinery; may mix and/or spray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable); remove undesirable and excess growth from farm grounds; remove rocks from fields; perform general cleanup of farm areas. Cooler (on-site)/
Packhouse:
Preparing freshly harvested crops for shipment in their original, unmanufactured state. Workers put orders together, pull different packs and packages them together to fill quantities ordered, vacuum cooling process, complete vacuum cooling paperwork, vacuum cooling operator . Unloading and palletizing or lifting bins, cartons, RPCs and totes of product/crop by forklift or by hand. Workers also will be loading the trucks.

): 75% of the time performs the duties of the jobs mentioned above. Replaces workers on bathroom breaks and assures safety precautions are followed during machine and tractor turns getting off the field or coming back to start new row/furrow.
Requirements:
2-month experience in general farm work and harvesting to avoid crop damage and personal injury. Written verification of experience is required. Cannot be color blind due to the need to distinguish colors of the product. Must be able to use shears, clippers and other agricultural tools (i.e., hand saw (can be powered by gas)); no smoking, illegal drugs, alcohol, or weapons of any sort in the housing or work fields. Worker safety on the job and in employer-provided housing is our top priority. Workers may not possess, consume, or be under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, illegal drugs, or other controlled substances at the worksite or in the employer-provided housing. The normal work week is 6 hours per day, Monday through Friday, 5 hours on Saturday (35 hours per week). Saturday work is required. Workers may be requested to work on Sundays or Federal Holidays depending on the conditions of the fields, weather, and maturity of the crop. Any work performed beyond regular work hours will be compensated in accordance with applicable laws. This is regular, full-time work for a temporary period of time requiring the worker to be available for work on a daily basis. This is not "day work". Excessive tardiness and/or absences will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action, in accordance to Company policies. The normal work hours are 6:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., but workers may be requested to start earlier or later depending on the time of year, hours of daylight, weather, and production requirements. Workers may also be requested to work split shifts, depending on operational needs. Workers are notified of any change in the start time.
Meal and Rest Periods:
The Company will adhere to applicable laws governing meal and rest periods based on the jurisdiction where work is performed and as outlined in the job order. All employees not occupying employer-provided housing must provide the Company with contact information before the worker commences employment. This contact information may be used to notifythe worker not to report work due to inclement weather or when work is not available or to notify the workers of any change in the worker's daily schedule, or for any other reason.
TRAINING AND PRODUCTION STANDARDS
Training will be provided in the field by the foreman during the first week of employment. Workers will be allowed a three-day training or break-in period, after which they must demonstrate the ability to perform the job duties described in this job order. By the fifth day of employment (including the training period), workers are expected to meet production standards. Commodity

  • 6•7.
96 Cartons per hour Spring Mix, Green/Red Leaf, Butter
  • 9-13.
5 Cartons per hour Each worker must maintain at least the weekly average productivity of their crew. Productivity is measured by the number of cartons picked per hour within the hours worked, averaged, and compared against the production of the other crew members assigned to the same commodity, crop variety, field site, location within a field, and work performed during that week. The employer will review productivity on a weekly basis. Workers who fail to maintain the crew average for the week may be reassigned to alternative job duties included in this job order, if available. Workers who continue to perform below standard after a first notice will be subject to progressive discipline, up to and including termination. Poor work performance, low production, substandard work quality, or inappropriate or aggressive conduct will result in an early end to the workday (minimum 4 hours)upon the first notice, with transportation provided immediately back to employer-provided housing. A second event of the above will result in suspension or termination.
Irrigation:
Field worker to perform the following duties:
  • Irrigation Flood:
    Workers walk on uneven furrows. Using a shovel, workers shape and/or remove soil gates within the furrow to give access or obstruct water flow in the field. Workers have to manually connect plastic pipes that connect the water source line into the field. These pipes weigh approximately 5lb, are 5ft in length, and 2'' in width.
  • Pre-Irrigation:
    Workers walk on wet uneven furrows and across beds. Field workers move within the field looking for any non-working or clogged sprinklers. Under the direction of the field supervisor, workers make sure sprinklers aren't clogged or have any pipe disconnected. Pre-irrigation is used to water down soil and prepare the field prior to farming.
Irrigation:
Workers walk on uneven furrows. Field workers pick and/or lay sprinklers and irrigation pipes. Employees are grouped in groups of 3 workers. One worker drives the tractor, and the other two workers walk behind a tractor and a trailer that carries aluminum pipes. Under the direction of the field supervisor, the worker grabs the pipes and sprinklers and by bending at the waist they have to manually unload and/or load pipes into the furrow to set the field up for irrigation following transplanting. Under the direction of the supervisor, the employee starts, turns on and off the irrigation cycles by adjusting the speed and pressure. Also when required, the employee applies fertilizers to the irrigation.
  • Break/move pipes: Workers walk on uneven furrows.
Field workers pick and/or lay sprinklers and irrigation pipes. After a transplanted field is watered down, workers have to move and/or break irrigation pipe lines. Under the direction of the field supervisor, field workers have to move and carry the aluminum pipes and sprinklers from one furrow into the next as needed to water down the field evenly. Aluminum pipes and sprinklers weigh approximately 50 lbs, 30ft in length, 2 in width.
  • Repair and maintain farm vehicles, implements, and mechanical equipment, which may include, washing of farm and harvest equipment with water.
Removal of dirt and debris from farm and harvest equipment. Application of soap and chlorine to farm and harvest equipment for proper disinfection and removal of potentially harmful microbes. Filling of fuel of harvest and farm equipment. Work performed solely on agriculture property parcels. General Ranch Maintenance / General Farm Labor includes, but is not limited to, on the farm road maintenance and dust control to farm roadways by means of farm equipment.
  • Manually plant, cultivate, and harvest vegetables, fruits, nuts, horticultural specialties, and field crops.
  • Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives.
  • Duties may include tilling soil; transplanting, weeding, thinning, or pruning crops; or cleaning, grading, sorting, packing, and loading harvested products.
  • May construct trellises, repair fences and farm buildings.
  • Harvest plants, and transplant or pot and label them.
  • Harvest fruits and vegetables by hand.
  • Clean work areas and equipment; maintain grounds and landscaping.
  • Sow grass seed, or plant plugs of grass.
  • Cut, roll, and stack sod.
  • Feel plants' leaves and note their coloring to detect the presence of insects or disease.
  • Dig, cut, and transplant seedlings, cuttings, trees, and shrubs.
  • Dig, rake, and screen soil, filling cold frames and hot beds in preparation for planting.
  • Inspect plants and bud ties to assess quality.
  • Scout, trap and destroy pests, such as moles, gophers, and mice, using pesticides.
  • Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss, and other materials to condition soil, using wheelbarrows or carts and shovels.
  • Repair farm buildings, fences, and other structures.
  • Plant, spray, weed, fertilize, and prune plants, shrubs, and trees, using gardening tools.
  • Walk beside or ride on planting machines while inserting plants in planter mechanisms at specified intervals.
  • Install and operate irrigation system.
  • Regulate outdoor irrigation systems.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation and climate control systems.
  • Irrigate soil, using portable pipes or ditch systems, and maintain ditches or pipes and pumps.
  • Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, forklifts, and self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow and fertilize soil, or to plant, cultivate, spray and harvest crops.
  • Move containerized shrubs, plants, and trees, using wheelbarrows or tractors.
  • Load and unload crops or containers of materials, manually or using conveyors, handtrucks, forklifts, or transfer augers.
  • Mix specified materials or chemicals, and dump solutions, powders, or seeds into planter or sprayer machinery.
  • Spray fertilizer or pesticide solutions to control insects, fungus and weed growth, and diseases, using hand sprayers.
  • Observe and listen to machinery operation to detect equipment malfunctions.
  • Manipulate controls to set, activate, and adjust mechanisms on machinery.
  • Operate or tend equipment used in agricultural production, such as tractors, forklifts, combines, and irrigation equipment.
  • Adjust, repair, clean, and service farm machinery and notify supervisors when machinery malfunctions.
  • Attach farm implements such as plows, discs, sprayers, or harvesters to tractors, using bolts and hand tools.
  • Load hoppers, containers, or conveyors to feed machines with products, using forklifts, transfer augers, suction gates, shovels, or pitchforks.
  • Operate towed machines such as seed drills or manure spreaders to plant, fertilize, dust, and spray crops.
