• To formally apply, please visit the EdJoin posting here: https://www.edjoin.org/Home/JobPosting/2281747 Job Summary Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, Business Services, the Accountant performs professional-level accounting and fiscal functions in support of the District's Business Services Department. The position maintains and reconciles financial records, prepares financial reports and analyses, supports budget development and monitoring, coordinates attendance accounting, maintains position control records, assists with payroll and audit activities, and ensures compliance with established accounting procedures, District policies, and applicable laws and regulations. The Accountant exercises independent judgment in performing complex accounting functions and provides technical assistance and support to District staff regarding financial procedures and fiscal matters. Duties Plan, coordinate, and perform professional accounting functions for assigned District funds, accounts, and programs. Maintain accurate and complete financial records in accordance with District procedures and applicable governmental accounting requirements. Analyze financial information to identify budget variances, trends, discrepancies, and potential fiscal issues. Assist in preparing the District's annual budget, interim financial reports, unaudited actuals, and other required fiscal reports. Prepare financial projections, spreadsheets, schedules, and analyses to support budget development and fiscal decision-making. Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, revenue, expenditures, and other financial records to verify accuracy and completeness. Review and prepare accounting entries and supporting documentation in accordance with established procedures. Assist with year-end closing activities, including recording liabilities, receivables, revenues, expenditures, and other year-end transactions. Prepare deposits and maintain appropriate records of District receipts and assigned accounts. Maintain and update District position control records in coordination with Human Resources, Payroll, and Business Services. Reconcile position control and payroll information to budget allocations and approved staffing levels. Review payroll information for accuracy, appropriate account coding, retirement compliance, and alignment with approved budgets. Assist in preparing audit schedules, supporting documentation, reconciliations, and other information requested by independent auditors and governmental agencies. Research and resolve accounting discrepancies, and recommend improvements to accuracy and internal controls. Develop and maintain complex computer-generated spreadsheets, reports, and financial analyses using Excel and other applicable software. Provide technical assistance and direction to fiscal and payroll staff regarding accounting procedures, account coding, reconciliations, and related financial activities. Assist District administrators and staff with questions regarding budgets, account balances, expenditures, purchasing, and other fiscal matters. Monitor assigned accounts and funds for compliance with approved budgets, restricted funding requirements, District policies, and applicable laws and regulations. Maintain confidentiality of financial, personnel, payroll, and other sensitive information. Assist in developing and improving Business Services procedures, systems, and internal controls. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Associate Superintendent, Business Services. Education and Experience A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field is desirable. A minimum of four years of increasingly responsible experience in accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, or school district business services is required. Experience in California public school accounting is highly desirable. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position may be considered.
Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of:
California public school accounting and auditing practices and requirements. Governmental accounting principles and double-entry bookkeeping through trial balance. California school finance and reporting requirements. Standardized Account Code Structure (SACS) and school district account coding. Budget development, monitoring, and financial reporting practices. Principles and practices of payroll, position control, attendance accounting, and fiscal recordkeeping. Internal controls and procedures for maintaining accurate financial records. Computerized accounting and financial management systems. Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications. Accounting software (i.e., Escape or similar accounting software) Proper office methods, procedures, organization, and recordkeeping.
Ability to:
Perform professional-level accounting functions accurately and efficiently. Analyze, reconcile, and interpret complex financial and statistical information. Identify discrepancies and independently research and resolve accounting issues. Prepare accurate financial reports, spreadsheets, projections, and analyses. Perform mathematical calculations accurately and efficiently. Organize and maintain detailed financial records and documentation. Understand and follow complex oral and written instructions with limited supervision. Exercise independent judgment within established policies and procedures. Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive financial and personnel information. Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District administrators, employees, auditors, vendors, governmental agencies, and others contacted in the course of work. Provide training, technical assistance, and direction to staff regarding accounting and fiscal procedures. Meet established deadlines and manage multiple priorities and interruptions effectively. Physical Demands Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods. Work is performed primarily in an office environment with light physical demands. Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to work effectively under deadlines and during periods of increased workload. Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy while working with frequent interruptions. Ability to read, interpret, analyze, and apply financial information, policies, procedures, and regulations. Ability to perform routine and complex mathematical calculations and maintain accuracy in detailed financial work.
