Job Description

About the opportunity Condon-Johnson & Associates is a growing construction company looking for a hands-on Senior Accounting Manager to join our team at a pivotal moment. This is not a "maintain the status quo" role — it is a rare chance to shape how a successful, long-tenured accounting department operates going forward. You will work directly with our Controller and ownership to modernize processes, document institutional knowledge, implement stronger controls, and grow into a key leadership position as the company evolves. Position Summary The Accounting Manager is a key accounting leadership position responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations, strengthening internal controls, driving process improvements, and supporting the company's continued growth. This role will work closely with accounting staff and leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, operational efficiency, and scalable accounting processes. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys improving systems, documenting processes, developing teams, and building sustainable solutions in a dynamic construction environment. Key Responsibilities Accounting Operations & Team Leadership Provide day-to-day leadership, supervision, and support to accounting staff. Coordinate and oversee accounting activities across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and related functions. Serve as the primary on-site accounting leader and resource for the accounting team. Assist with month-end and quarter-end close activities, including account reconciliations, financial reviews, and reporting processes. Support continuity of accounting operations by developing cross-functional knowledge and operational coverage across all accounting functions. Process Improvement & Internal Controls Evaluate existing accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Design, implement, and maintain effective internal controls across accounting functions. Lead initiatives to digitize manual and paper-based processes by identifying appropriate tools and technologies. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, process documentation, and training materials. Create cross-training programs to improve operational resilience and reduce key-person dependencies. Monitor accounting processes and recommend improvements that support company growth and operational excellence. Financial Reporting & Compliance Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting activities. Support compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements. Participate in tax, payroll, and compliance-related activities as assigned. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including auditors, tax professionals, and operational leadership. Strategic Support Partner with leadership to improve financial processes and support informed business decision-making. Contribute to special projects, system enhancements, and process improvement initiatives. Assist in evaluating and implementing accounting technologies and workflow automation solutions. Support the continued development and scalability of the accounting department as the organization grows. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. 7+ years of progressive accounting experience. Minimum 2-3 years of supervisory or management experience. Strong knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and financial reporting functions. Experience documenting business processes and implementing internal controls. Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Construction industry accounting experience. CPA, CMA, or progress toward a professional accounting certification. Experience with Viewpoint Vista or similar construction accounting software. Knowledge of job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, progress billing, and certified payroll. Exposure to tax compliance, including payroll tax, sales tax, and income tax coordination. Experience leading software implementations, workflow automation, or process digitization projects. Success Factors Demonstrates sound judgment and maintains a high level of confidentiality. Takes initiative and proactively identifies opportunities for improvement. Approaches challenges with curiosity, critical thinking, and a continuous improvement mindset. Builds positive working relationships across departments and levels of the organization. Balances attention to detail with the ability to see broader operational objectives. Works independently while effectively collaborating with remote and on-site team members. Thrives in an evolving environment and enjoys building processes that support long-term growth. Work Environment & Compensation This is a full-time, in-office position based in our Oakland Corporate office. Regular on-site attendance is required to effectively support the accounting team and collaborate with operational leadership.
Annual salary range:
