This position is an important part of the team and supports the organization's day-to-day financial operations while helping ensure accurate, timely, and well-maintained financial records. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Senior Accountant is responsible for a broad range of accounting functions, with primary responsibility for general ledger activities, accounts payable, account reconciliations, and support for month-end and year-end close. The position also contributes to financial reporting, budgeting, audits, nonprofit accounting, and special projects. This is a hands-on position well suited to someone who enjoys working across different areas of accounting, is comfortable managing multiple priorities, and takes pride in accuracy and follow-through.
What You'll Do:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate general ledger records and prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, allocations, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and other adjustments.
  • Perform monthly credit card, balance sheet accounts, and other reconciliations; research and resolve discrepancies.
  • Process accounts payable, employee reimbursements, vendor payments, and related documentation.
  • Maintain vendor records and assist with annual 1099 preparation and reporting.
  • Record and reconcile fixed assets, construction in progress, and depreciation.
  • Assist with monthly and year-end closing processes and maintain supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Assist the CFO with monthly financial statements, management reports, budget tracking, and budget-to-actual analysis.
  • Assist with tracking restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, and appropriate allocation of revenue and expenses.
  • Prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for the annual audit and other financial and regulatory reporting, including the Form 990.
  • Work with staff throughout the organization to answer routine accounting questions and support proper financial procedures and coding.
  • Assist with maintaining and improving accounting procedures, systems, and internal controls.
  • Provide backup and support to other members of the Finance Department as needed.
  • Participate in special projects and take on additional responsibilities as organizational needs require.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial, employee, donor, and other sensitive information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO. What We're Looking For - our ideal candidate:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field or comparable experience.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience required.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, accounts payable, and month-end close.
  • Experience with MS 365 software including Word and Excel and accounting/financial systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a small, fast-moving organization.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with both finance and non-finance staff.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, maintain confidentiality, and contribute as a collaborative member of a small team.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and willing to jump in and help wherever needed. We would especially value candidates with:
  • Nonprofit accounting experience, including restricted funds or grants.
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud accounting system.
  • Passionate for the arts and the role they play in strengthening communities.
Working Conditions & Physical Tasks:
  • Typical office environment; requires the ability to remain seated at a computer workstation for extended periods.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to use hands to type, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • The employee may infrequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
