Job Description

The Senior Accountant II is responsible for coordinating monthly closing activities performed by the other Senior and Staff Accountants; preparation and updating of accounting processes and procedures; coordination and/or preparation of all Medicare Cost Report schedules; coordination and/or preparation of all 990 tax return schedules; coordination and/or preparation of all audit schedules, managing the company insurance policies and annual applications, various treasury functions, and other various projects and processes as directed by the Director of Accounting. This position requires a strong understanding of our organizational structure and all related entities, thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Standards and well as auditing standards, non-profit tax returns, Medicare Cost reporting, and general business best practices. This position will have some oversight/quality assurance responsibility over routine work of the other accountants and will be responsible for ensuring the timely completion of monthly closing tasks and various government filings. The Senior Accountant II is also responsible for assisting with day-to-day review of the work of other accounting staff and overall quality assurance of work product within the general accounting group. This position may also be responsible for recording and analyzing payroll activity; monitoring cash flow for all entities, recording and analyzing workers comp liability and self-insured plan IBNR liability and other areas requiring analytical review and judgment; advanced accounting research and interpretation of technically diverse areas such as fund accounting, leases, accounting for software costs and revenue recognition, installment sales, grant accounting, internet sales, sales tax applicability, etc.; and handle policy and procedure documentation and general internal control monitoring. The Senior Accountant II also performs, fosters, and facilitates appropriate communications with departments within Empath Health and its Affiliates and is a liaison with external parties including, but not limited to, grantors and vendors. The Senior Accountant II will assist with meeting with department heads within Empath Health and its Affiliates, as needed to increase accountability related to internal controls and financial results. The Senior Accountant II may also assist with pro forma analyses related to grant and various project proposals and opportunities. The Senior Accountant II will take a leading role for any software conversion or implementation projects on behalf of the accounting area. Within parameters of appropriate segregation of duties, this position may also at times be required to be responsible for accurate and timely preparation of bank reconciliations; reconciling and recording accounts receivable and revenues between the patient accounting system and the general ledger; and recording and analyzing work-in-process and fixed assets; preparing journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations; reviewing, approving and recording cash receipts.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
  • Education and/or
Experience:
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in accounting or a business-related field with significant accounting course work or major in accounting; five years or more of hands-on general ledger accounting experience or a combination of general ledger accounting and financial audit experience in a public accounting environment. A CPA is strongly preferred.
  • Experience coordinating project-management related tasks to meet timely deliverables of self and others.
  • Direct health care industry including cost report preparation and not-for-profit accounting and tax reporting experience are keys for success.
  • Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) and Workday Adaptive experience is a plus. Prior general ledger accounting software experience is essential.
  • Strong analytical skills, strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize workload to meet evolving needs of the organization.
  • Significant Microsoft Excel experience required; preferably at an advanced level; and additional Microsoft Office experience preferred.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are essential and prior direct customer service experience (internal and/or external) is necessary.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
(Note that due to the need for appropriate internal controls and segregation of duties, not all of the following may be performed by a single General Ledger Accountant, Staff Accountant or Senior Accountant.) 1. Prepare schedules supporting annual cost reports, tax returns, and other regulatory reporting for all applicable entities. 2. Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of all annual audit schedules and work directly with external auditors to help ensure smooth year-end closes. 3. Provide oversight and coordination for the monthly closing process, and oversight and guidance to the other accountants as needed during this process in order to meet or exceed deliverable timelines with accuracy. 4. Provide general business and administrative oversight of such tasks such as managing the organization insurance policies; process and procedures developments and updates; and internal controls reviews. 5. Interact with department heads and other staff within Empath Health and its Affiliates, as needed, to provide stewardship coaching and increase accountability related to internal controls and financial results. 6. Record, reconcile, analyze, and/or approve payroll and cash receipts activity. 7. Perform various treasury functions, including the setting up of new accounts and managing online users. 8. Monitor and communicate cash flow for efficient cash management. 9. Review and summarize contracts/agreements; and research, as necessary, and apply appropriate accounting treatment related to fund accounting and trusts. 10. Assist with pro forma analyses related to grants and various project proposals and opportunities. 11. Assist with the preparation of annual operating budgets. 12. Present financial results to managers and others. 13. Lead accounting team in solo or group meetings. 14. Update department policies and procedures; make recommendations for improvements; and streamline processes without compromising accuracy. 15. Other duties as assigned.
