Job Description

Hard Chrome Enterprises and Action Plating Corporation are FAA-certified aerospace metal finishing companies serving customers in the aerospace, defense, medical, automotive, firearms, and industrial markets. We are seeking an experienced Controller and Tax Accountant who can take full ownership of the accounting and tax-preparation functions for multiple related businesses. This is not a basic bookkeeping position. The successful candidate must be capable of maintaining accurate books throughout the year, producing reliable monthly financial statements, managing manufacturing and inventory accounting, preparing year-end tax workpapers, and preparing or substantially completing federal and state business tax returns. The position reports directly to company ownership and will play an important role in financial reporting, tax planning, cash-flow management, internal controls, profitability analysis, and strategic decision-making. You will own the accounting function for multiple manufacturing companies, including: Accounting and Financial Reporting Manage the general ledger and accounting records for multiple related companies. Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Complete bank, credit-card, loan, payroll, intercompany, and balance-sheet reconciliations. Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, accruals, prepaid expenses, and journal entries. Review payroll records and coordinate payroll-related accounting and reporting. Maintain fixed-asset schedules and calculate depreciation. Manage intercompany transactions and ensure they are properly documented and eliminated where appropriate. Prepare cash-flow forecasts, budgets, and budget-to-actual variance reports. Develop useful management reports and key performance indicators. Identify unusual transactions, accounting errors, balance-sheet discrepancies, and financial risks. Manufacturing and Inventory Accounting Maintain accurate inventory records and inventory valuation. Reconcile physical inventory to the accounting system. Analyze raw materials, work in process, finished goods, scrap, and obsolete inventory. Develop and improve job-costing and manufacturing-cost systems. Analyze direct labor, overhead, chemical usage, outside processing, and production costs. Evaluate gross margin by company, customer, process, and service line. Help management identify areas of margin erosion, waste, excess spending, and poor cost recovery. Year-End Tax Preparation Manage the year-end accounting close for all assigned entities. Prepare complete year-end tax workpapers and supporting schedules. Prepare or substantially complete federal and state business income-tax returns. Prepare or coordinate S-corporation, C-corporation, partnership, and related entity returns, as applicable. Prepare shareholder and owner tax schedules, including K-1 support where applicable. Reconcile book income to taxable income. Prepare depreciation, fixed-asset, officer-compensation, shareholder-loan, and related-party schedules. Prepare and file Forms 1099 and other required annual information returns. Coordinate W-2 and payroll-tax reporting with the payroll provider. Manage state sales-and-use-tax filings and other recurring business-tax filings. Monitor tax deadlines and ensure timely filing of returns and extensions. Identify potential tax-planning opportunities before year-end rather than after the year has closed. Coordinate with outside CPAs, attorneys, and tax specialists when specialized review or advice is required. Respond to routine tax notices and assist with tax examinations or audits. Maintain organized documentation supporting all tax positions and filings. Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Complete bank, credit-card, loan, payroll, intercompany, and balance-sheet reconciliations. Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, accruals, prepaid expenses, and journal entries. Review payroll records and coordinate payroll-related accounting and reporting. Maintain fixed-asset schedules and calculate depreciation. Manage intercompany transactions and ensure they are properly documented and eliminated where appropriate. Prepare cash-flow forecasts, budgets, and budget-to-actual variance reports. Develop useful management reports and key performance indicators. Identify unusual transactions, accounting errors, balance-sheet discrepancies, and financial risks. Within the first year, the successful candidate will: Produce accurate monthly financial statements on a consistent schedule. Complete all material balance-sheet reconciliations. Improve inventory accuracy and valuation. Establish reliable manufacturing cost and margin reporting. Clean up questionable or unsupported balance-sheet accounts. Complete a disciplined year-end close. Prepare accurate and well-supported business tax returns. Identify tax-planning opportunities before year-end. Improve cash-flow forecasting and financial visibility. Provide ownership with clear, timely, and actionable financial information. Who Should Not Apply This position is not a good fit for someone who: Has primarily performed data entry, bill payment, payroll processing, or basic bookkeeping. Has never personally prepared business income-tax returns. Has only gathered documents for a CPA but has not prepared tax workpapers or returns. Has no manufacturing, inventory, job-costing, or cost-accounting experience. Cannot independently prepare and explain a balance sheet, income statement, and cash-flow statement. Is uncomfortable reconciling difficult accounts or investigating discrepancies. Avoids challenging management when transactions are unsupported, improperly classified, or financially risky. Waits until tax season to consider tax planning. Requires constant direction rather than taking ownership of deadlines and results. Is weak in Excel, accounting systems, documentation, or written communication. Believes closing the books means simply downloading reports from QuickBooks. Is unwilling to work onsite and understand how the manufacturing operation actually functions.
