Job Description

Northampton, MA (Onsite) $32.70/hour | Full-Time | Union Position Our client, a well-established nonprofit organization in Western Massachusetts, is seeking a Staff Accountant II to join their finance team. This role will serve as a key member of the accounting function, with primary responsibility for balance sheet account integrity, monthly reconciliations, journal entries, lease accounting, and state and local contract billing across the organization. This position is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys detailed reconciliation work, month-end close responsibilities, variance analysis, and contributing to a mission-driven organization through strong financial stewardship and accuracy. Key Responsibilities Prepare and reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis, including cash, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accrued liabilities, deferred revenue, and other designated accounts Investigate and resolve reconciling items, escalating aged or unresolved variances with written analysis as needed Maintain organized reconciliation workpapers and supporting documentation in accordance with departmental standards Prepare and post journal entries related to accruals, reclassifications, adjustments, and correcting entries Support month-end and year-end close activities, including flux analysis, rollforwards, elimination entries, and audit schedules Assist with annual audit preparation and respond to auditor requests for balance sheet support and related documentation Maintain lease accounting schedules, including right-of-use assets and lease liability rollforwards Record monthly lease amortization and interest entries and reconcile related balance sheet accounts Prepare cost reimbursement billings and state and local contract billings in accordance with funding requirements Reconcile grant receivable and deferred revenue accounts to billing activity and remittances Monitor unbilled balances and outstanding receivables to support timely collection Develop and maintain Excel-based reconciliation templates and supporting schedules Help identify and implement improvements to accounting processes, internal controls, and reconciliation workflows Collaborate with the finance team and other internal stakeholders on day-to-day accounting operations Additional Exposure Exposure to nonprofit accounting, grant and contract billing, lease accounting, balance sheet ownership, audit support, and financial processes tied to state-funded programs Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field required Minimum of 3 years of general ledger accounting experience Strong experience with balance sheet reconciliations and month-end close activities Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, VLOOKUPs, and multi-sheet reconciliation workbooks Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines concurrently Solid understanding of GAAP, particularly around balance sheet presentation and account classification Experience in nonprofit, public sector, or government-funded accounting environments preferred Experience with grant or state contract billing and compliance requirements (DDS, DMH, DPH, etc.) preferred Experience with ERP or fund accounting systems is a plus Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment Compensation & Benefits Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) Health and dental insurance Life insurance and long-term disability coverage 403(b) retirement plan Tuition assistance and professional development opportunities Eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Opportunities for career development and advancement
