Company DescriptionBlind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM) is a 501©(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing career and training resources to blind and visually impaired people across multiple locations in the United States. BISM is recognized for our adult, youth, and senior training programs. Our belief in the capabilities of blind people is the foundation for residential skills training, innovative work readiness, home management and college-prep classes. As one of the largest employers of blind people, BISM's manufacturing operations offer competitive employment opportunities for blind people while exceeding the expectations of our customers. Blind Associates play a crucial role by breaking down employment barriers in all divisions of our organization, including Human Resources, IT, and accounting. The Federal Government is BISM's largest customer, and we support all branches of the US Military by manufacturing a variety of uniforms. BISM manufactures a large variety of products for the state of Maryland and the commercial market. Our largest contributions are a full line of janitorial products, a variety of office supply paper products, lock sets, and custom labeled bottled water. We further support the US Military by operating 9 Base Supply Centers (BSCs). Throughout all our BISM locations, we work to positively change people's attitudes about blindness.

Position Summary The Senior Director of Accounting and Finance serves as the organization's lead financial executive responsible for the integrity, transparency, and effectiveness of all financial operations. This role ensures strong financial management across a multi-site, mission-driven manufacturing organization employing a large blind workforce. The Senior Director of Accounting and Finance oversees accounting operations, budgeting, financial analysis, risk mitigation, and compliance, ensuring financial practices align with organizational values and long-term sustainability. This leader supervises the Controller and the Accounting Team and provides strategic support to senior leadership and the Board of Trustees through clear financial analysis, forecasting, and operational insight. Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Strategy Serve as the senior financial advisor to the President/CEO and the Executive Team. Lead development of annual budgets, multi-year forecasts, and capital planning models. Provide decision support through financial analysis, modeling, and cost evaluations. Present financial performance and trends to leadership and the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee. Accounting & Financial Operations Oversight Supervise the Controller and the Accounting Team and ensure effective management of AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, cash management, and financial reporting functions. Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes. Maintain robust internal controls that protect organizational assets and safeguard financial integrity. Oversee treasury functions, cash flow, banking, and investment activities. Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis Lead the organization-wide annual operating and capital budgeting process. Partner with operational leaders to analyze facility-level financial performance, cost drivers, contract margins, labor utilization, and program profitability. Ensure clarity, transparency, and accessibility of financial information for non-financial managers. Compliance, Audit & Risk Management Oversee preparation of annual audits and coordinate work with external auditors. • Oversee preparation of annual Tax Returns and coordinate work with external accounting firm. Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, state/federal regulations, grant requirements, and the AbilityOne Program's contracting expectations. Monitor financial and operational risk and support insurance, contracting, and internal policy development. Establish and maintain relationships with key risk management partners. Business & Operational Support Provide cost accounting leadership for manufacturing and contract pricing decisions. Research, review, and evaluate financial considerations of new business opportunities and current and future contracts. Evaluate financial impact of new initiatives, programs, and revenue opportunities. Strengthen organizational systems, processes, and financial reporting tools to support growth and operational efficiency. Lead the transition of business operations into new states or territories, including tax exemption establishment and reporting. Team Leadership & Development Lead, mentor, and develop the Accounting Team to build capacity, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement. Ensure strong collaboration between finance, HR, operations, procurement, and leadership teams. Staff the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees. Support professional development and succession readiness within the department. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred. 7-10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership, ideally in nonprofit, manufacturing, or government-contracting environments. Experience supervising and managing a full accounting operation. Expertise in GAAP, nonprofit accounting, cost accounting, and compliance requirements. Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills. Strong business sense. Strategic cash management experience. Key Competencies Strategic financial thinking. Mission-oriented decision-making.
