Overview:
A mission-driven nonprofit organization in the Baltimore area is seeking an experienced accounting professional with strong grant accounting expertise to join its finance team. This role can be positioned at the Senior Accountant or Accounting Manager level depending on experience and will play a key role in financial reporting, compliance, and supporting leadership with financial insights. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a dynamic, purpose-driven environment and has experience managing government and grant-funded programs .
Key Responsibilities:
Manage day-to-day accounting operations including GL, journal entries, reconciliations, AP/AR, and financial reporting Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements Oversee or support grant accounting , including budgeting, tracking expenditures, compliance, and reporting to grantors Prepare grant reimbursement billings and monitor receivables Analyze financial results and provide variance analysis and recommendations to leadership Assist with or lead annual audits and serve as a liaison with external auditors and funding agencies Maintain and improve internal controls, policies, and accounting procedures Partner with program and operational teams to ensure alignment with grant requirements and budgets Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning efforts (Manager level) Provide oversight or mentorship to accounting staff and help drive process improvements
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 5+ years of accounting experience , preferably within a nonprofit environment Strong experience with grant accounting and financial reporting Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards Experience working with government grants, federal/state funding, or healthcare/community-based funding is a plus Proficiency in accounting systems and Excel Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate in a fast-paced environment
What We're Looking For:
A hands-on accountant who can operate both tactically and strategically Someone comfortable working with cross-functional teams and leadership Experience supporting audits and compliance-heavy environments Prior experience in nonprofit, healthcare, or grant-funded organizations preferred
Compensation & Benefits:
Competitive salary commensurate with experience (generally in the $75K-$100K+ range depending on level ) Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, retirement, and PTO Flexible work environment (hybrid options available depending on role level)
