Job Summary Michigan Audubon is seeking a detail-oriented and mission-driven part-time Staff Accountant to join our team in Okemos, Michigan. Incorporated in 1905, Michigan Audubon is a respected statewide conservation organization dedicated to connecting birds and people through conservation, education, and research efforts across Michigan. With members, donors, chapters, sanctuaries, education programs, research initiatives, and statewide partnerships, Michigan Audubon operates as a dynamic and growing nonprofit organization. This position plays an important role in supporting the financial health, operational efficiency, and organizational accountability that help advance our mission. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Staff Accountant will support daily accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, payroll coordination, budgeting support, and audit preparation. Essential Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Operations Maintain accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in QuickBooks and related systems. Reconcile monthly balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies promptly. Process accounts payable, including invoice review, coding, vendor management, and reimbursement requests. Process accounts receivable transactions, including recording deposits, applying payments, and supporting invoicing efforts. Prepare bank deposits, reconcile bank accounts, and assist with cash management and organizational cash flow monitoring. Prepare journal entries and support month-end and year-end close processes. Collaborate with the organization's external accounting firm on monthly financial statement preparation and review. Maintain organized and audit-ready financial documentation and records. Financial Reporting & Analysis Prepare internal financial reports and supporting documentation for leadership review. Assist with quarterly and year-end financial reconciliations and reporting. Support budget preparation, forecasting, and financial analysis efforts. Help provide financial information and reporting that supports organizational decision-making. Payroll, Insurance & Administrative Support Provide payroll-related reporting and supporting employee benefit and insurance allocation information. Coordinate and manage annual corporate insurance renewals and related documentation. Support onboarding paperwork and financial setup for new employees. Maintain organized financial, insurance, and HR-related records and documentation. Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls Assist with annual audit preparation and requests from auditors. Maintain compliance with GAAP standards and organizational financial policies. Support strong internal controls and identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies. Ensure accurate filing, scanning, and retention of financial documentation. Collaboration & Communication Communicate proactively with the CEO regarding accounting issues, deadlines, and project completion. Respond professionally to vendor, donor, and staff financial inquiries. Work collaboratively with staff across departments to support organizational operations and strategic goals. Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience required. Experience in nonprofit accounting is beneficial, but not required. Experience working in a small office environment preferred. Software & Technical Skills Strong proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Familiarity with payroll, CRM, and expense management systems is beneficial. Experience with platforms such as Neon and Gusto is a plus. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of accounting principles, GAAP, and internal controls. Strong attention to detail, organization, and accuracy. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage confidential information with professionalism and discretion. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
