Accountant

About the Role

The Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of a fast‑paced freight brokerage. This position is responsible for daily accounting tasks including revenue recognition, carrier settlement, billing, general ledger maintenance, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, experienced in logistics accounting workflows, and comfortable working with high-volume transactional data.

Key Responsibilities

Revenue & Billing

Process and audit customer invoices for accuracy, ensuring alignment with load documentation and rate confirmations.

Maintaining and auditing customer accounts to ensure timely receipt of payment from customers

Monitor unbilled loads and ensure timely billing.

Assist with revenue accruals at month-end.

Carrier Payables

Process carrier invoices and settlements, verifying supporting documents such as PODs, lumper receipts, detention approvals, and rate agreements.

Investigate and resolve carrier payment discrepancies.

Prepare weekly payment runs and maintain accurate aging schedules.

General Accounting

Prepare and post routine journal entries.

Reconcile key balance sheet accounts, including AR, AP, cash, and prepaid items.

Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.

Maintain documentation for audits and internal controls.

Financial Analysis & Reporting

Support the preparation of internal financial reports, KPIs, and variance analysis.

Assist in preparing cost analyses related to lanes, carriers, and customer profitability.

Process Improvement

Help streamline accounting processes, especially those tied to TMS workflows.

Identify reconciliation issues and collaborate with operations teams to prevent recurring errors.

Support system upgrades or integrations between accounting software and TMS platforms.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

1-3 years of accounting experience; logistics or freight brokerage experience strongly preferred.

Familiarity with Transportation Management Systems (e.g., McLeod, TMW, Ascend, LoadMaster, Rose Rocket) is a plus.

Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics GP.

Skills & Competencies

Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting fundamentals.

High attention to detail and accuracy with large volumes of data.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines.

Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, reconciliation tools).

Excellent communication and problem‑solving abilities.

Strong organizational skills and an aptitude for process improvement.
