Job Description

Position summary We're looking for a senior accountant who can manage a book of accounting clients across bookkeeping, payroll, cash flow forecasting, and light advisory work, with minimal day-to-day oversight. This is not a bookkeeper role — we need someone who understands the "why" behind the numbers, can spot issues before they become problems, and is comfortable working directly with client management, not just their books. As the firm grows, this role has a clear path into drafting compilations and reviews, and taking on a larger advisory role with clients. Key responsibilities Manage full-cycle bookkeeping for an assigned client portfolio in QuickBooks Online, including reconciliations, month-end close, and clean chart-of-account maintenance in accordance with GAAP Process and manage payroll for assigned clients, including filings and compliance deadlines Prepare cash flow forecasts and basic financial analysis for assigned clients, and walk clients' management teams through the results Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients, working directly with client management on bookkeeping, payroll, and day-to-day financial questions Identify and flag advisory opportunities (cash flow issues, tax planning triggers, process inefficiencies) to the owner, and help deliver that advisory work as it develops As the firm's financial statement season ramps up, assist in drafting compilations and reviews in the firm's financial statement/workpaper software for owner review and sign-off Diagnose and clean up messy or disorganized client books as needed, bringing them back into proper GAAP-compliant shape Maintain clean, audit-ready workpapers and documentation for every client engagement Track and manage own workload and deadlines within the firm's practice management software Qualifications 5+ years of accounting experience spanning bookkeeping and payroll, ideally in public accounting or a multi-client environment Strong working knowledge of GAAP — this is a must, not a nice-to-have CPA preferred, but not required for candidates who can demonstrate the experience and judgment this role calls for Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Lacerte or ProConnect Able to take ownership of a client's books and payroll and run with them without heavy supervision Comfortable diagnosing and cleaning up a messy or disorganized set of books — this comes up regularly with new and transitioning clients Strong client communication skills; professional, proactive, comfortable presenting numbers to non-accountants Willing to learn and responsibly use AI tools as part of the firm's workflow Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred; not required if experience demonstrates the above Compensation Competitive base salary, benchmarked to the Billings, MT market Individual performance bonus (quarterly or annual) tied to client retention, on-time close/filing rates, and identified advisory or add-on opportunities Eligible for firm-wide profit-sharing pool once established Growth path toward financial statement preparation and advisory services as the firm scales Tools used QuickBooks Online, CCH Axcess, and many more.
Pay:
$72,000.00 - $96,000.00 per year
