Commercial real estate development and property management firm based on Long Island with a robust portfolio of medical, office, retail, and industrial properties.
POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Construction Accountant to join their centralized Finance & Accounting team. Reporting directly to the Assistant Controller, this role oversees project cost accounting across active ground-up developments and capital improvement projects. You will play a critical role in job-cost tracking, vendor payment workflows, budget variance analysis, and operational reporting to ensure projects remain on budget and financially compliant.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Cost Accounting:
Manage high-volume accounts payable for active construction and real estate development projects; ensure accurate coding and proper approvals.
Budget Tracking & Variance Analysis:
Maintain detailed job-cost ledgers, track budget changes, evaluate cost variances, and ensure proper documentation in alignment with internal controls.
Vendor & Contract Management:
Coordinate timely payments to general contractors, subcontractors, and vendors while resolving invoice disputes or discrepancies promptly.
Reconciliations & Reporting:
Assist leadership with monthly project reconciliations, work-in-progress (WIP) tracking, and custom financial reporting for executive reviews.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner closely with Project Managers, operational leaders, and external vendors to maintain seamless accounting workflows.
Special Projects:
Support the Assistant Controller and broader finance team with ad-hoc financial analysis and audit preparation as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field required.
Experience:
2+ years of accounting experience, ideally within commercial real estate, construction, or project-based accounting environments.
Technical Skills:
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Experience with real estate accounting platforms (e.g., MRI, Yardi, or similar ERP software) is highly preferred.
Core Competencies:
Exceptional attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to prioritize multiple project deadlines in a dynamic setting.
Communication:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Compensation / Pay
Rate (Up to): $65,000.00 - $85,000.00
