  • Full-time Accountant CARECEN empowers immigrant communities on Long Island through legal services, social work services, community services, and advocacy.
With locations in Brentwood and Hempstead, CARECEN supports thousands of families each year and plays a leading role in addressing the interconnected needs of immigrant communities across Long Island. The Accountant supports CARECEN's financial operations by managing daily accounts payable and accounts receivable activities and ensuring accurate, timely financial records. This role plays a critical support function within the Finance Department and helps maintain strong financial controls in a nonprofit, grant-funded environment. The Accountant works under the supervision of the Finance Director and collaborates as needed with program and administrative staff. The Accountant position is full-time, hourly, non-exempt. Primary Responsibilities Accounts Payable (AP) & Accounts Receivable (AR) Process and reconcile daily accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions and allocations. Ensure invoices, payments, and deposits are accurately recorded and properly coded. Monitor outstanding receivables and follow up as needed. Financial Recordkeeping & Reconciliation Perform regular bank and account reconciliations. Maintain accurate general ledger entries using QuickBooks. Maintain organized financial files and supporting documentation. Track cost categories from grant budgets to ensure spending aligns with approved budgets, including 'Personnel', 'OTPS', and 'Other' costs. Systems & Compliance Support Ensure financial data is entered accurately and consistently in QuickBooks. Support the Finance Director with grant-related financial tracking as needed. Support Audits by maintaining proper documentation and responding to Audit requests. Adhere to CARECEN's financial policies and internal controls. Qualifications and Requirements Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred, or equivalent relevant experience. Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel (required). Experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to manage routine financial tasks independently and efficiently. Prior experience working in a nonprofit and/or grant-funded organization preferred. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information. The applicant should be comfortable working in a mission-driven organization serving diverse, low-income immigrant communities, and should approach their work with professionalism, reliability, and care.
Salary and Benefits Compensation:
$22.00 to $25.00 hourly Work environment: Ability to work hybrid based on hybrid work agreement with office hours in CARECEN's Hempstead and Brentwood offices
