4/10/26 Available for Immediate Hiring The City of La Vergne is looking for temporary part-time hires with a background in Accounting to assist the finance department with year-end audits and budget. No more than 28 hours per week with heavy data entry required daily.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Finance Director, the temporary Accountant performs complex professional-level governmental accounting duties consistent with GASB standards, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the State of Tennessee's Municipal Chart of Accounts. Responsibilities include preparing financial statements, reconciling general ledger accounts, assisting with budgeting processes, providing audit support, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and internal controls. This position utilizes local government software for financial operations and reporting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below reflect typical tasks; additional duties may be assigned as needed. Maintains accurate general ledger accounts by preparing journal entries, conducting monthly reconciliations, and promptly correcting discrepancies. Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports, complying with GASB standards and GAAP guidelines. Assists with the preparation of annual budget documents, forecasts, and periodic financial analyses. Provides detailed assistance during annual audit processes, including preparation of schedules, gathering supporting documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries. Ensures accurate classification and reporting of revenues, expenditures, and interfund transfers within the Local Government accounting system. Reviews bank reconciliations, verify financial data accuracy, and addresses inconsistencies promptly. Assists with tracking, reconciliation, and financial reporting of state and federal grants. Assists in special projects and departmental initiatives as directed by the Finance Director.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Must be at least 18 years old. Must successfully pass a criminal and financial background.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough understanding of governmental accounting standards (GASB), GAAP, fund accounting practices, and municipal financial regulations. Proficiency in Local Government accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel. Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify discrepancies, reconcile complex accounts, and provide accurate financial reporting. Ability to interpret financial data, prepare financial reports, and communicate information clearly to diverse stakeholders. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks within established deadlines. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external auditors. Commitment to ethical standards, confidentiality, and professionalism in handling sensitive financial information.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position involves predominantly sedentary office work requiring occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds. Daily activities involve frequent sitting, standing, talking, hearing, and using hands for operating computers and office equipment. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Office-Based Financial Operations:
The Accountant primarily works in an office environment, utilizing Local Government financial software and standard office technology to manage, process, and analyze financial transactions. This role requires frequent computer usage, document review, and data entry in a structured office setting.

Deadline-Driven and High-Accuracy Expectations:
The Accountant role is deadline-sensitive, particularly during fiscal year-end, audit preparation, and budget cycles. The ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously and perform accurately under pressure is critical.
Public Service Orientation:
While primarily internal facing, the Accountant may occasionally participate in public meetings, provide information to city residents, and support transparency through clear and accurate financial communication. These interactions help foster public trust in the city's fiscal responsibility.
Regular Work Schedule:
