Job Title:
Remote Cost Analyst Job Description The Cost Analyst will support major capital utility projects, including wind, solar, and new generation plants, by providing comprehensive cost analysis, forecasting, and project controls. This role focuses on maintaining accurate project financials, supporting earned value management, and ensuring sound utility accounting practices are followed. The position is largely remote and will work within a mature, automated project controls environment to help guide strategic projects over the long term. Responsibilities Verify project invoicing information for accuracy and completeness before processing. Perform necessary journal entries for project closing to ensure accurate financial reporting. Perform financial systems reconciliation to align project records with accounting systems. Monitor material and subcontract commitments, analyze trends, and prepare variance forecasts. Prepare and maintain project assumptions used in cost estimates and forecasts. Process monthly and quarterly accruals in line with utility accounting practices. Maintain and track project cash flow to support budgeting and funding decisions. Assemble project cost estimates and create detailed project schedules for major projects. Monitor cost and progress for all major projects and report on deviations from plan. Estimate quantities, track quantities, and forecast approved contract scope on an annual basis. Generate detailed earned value reports for all major projects to identify issues early and support adjustments to the work plan. Support cost control and project controls activities, including change order tracking and cost model updates. Support document control activities, including RFIs and submittals, as part of overall project controls. Collaborate with project teams, project controls staff, and other stakeholders to ensure consistent use of established systems and processes. Utilize Unifier and project schedules (such as those developed in Primavera P6) to support cost and scheduling integration. Work independently in a largely remote environment while maintaining clear communication with the broader project team. Essential Skills At least 10 years of relevant work experience in cost analysis, project controls, or closely related roles. Strong familiarity with forecasting, accruals, and journal entries. Experience with utility accounting practices. Hands-on experience with earned value concepts and cost models, including understanding of accruals. Ability to work independently and manage workload in a largely remote setting. Experience with cost analysis and cost control for large projects. Experience with project controls, including monitoring cost and progress. Experience with document control processes, including RFIs and submittals. Ability to support both cost (approximately 75%) and scheduling/document controls (approximately 25%) responsibilities. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail when reconciling financial systems and reviewing invoices. Ability to assemble estimates and create or interpret detailed project schedules. Additional Skills & Qualifications Utility industry experience, preferably at least five years. Experience in power generation or processing plant projects. Experience supporting large utility projects, either directly for a utility or for an EPC organization. Utility accounting experience is highly beneficial. Familiarity with Primavera P6, with the ability to read and understand schedules (not required to be a strong user). Experience working with Unifier, including use within a mature project controls environment (not required to be a strong user). Experience with earned value reporting and cost modeling for large capital projects. Comfort working within established, automated project controls systems and processes. Residence within approximately 60 miles of Madison, WI, to support occasional office and job site visits. Work Environment This role operates primarily in a remote work environment, with standard business hours such as 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Cost Analyst will support multiple generation projects and will interact regularly with the project controls team and other project stakeholders. Most of the project controls team consists of long-term contractors, and the organization offers a stable, long-term workload to support ongoing capital projects. The team uses a fully built-out and mature Unifier system with automation and sound processes, and contractors are expected to use this system consistently. The work culture emphasizes autonomy and trust; leadership does not micro-manage and allows the team to manage their work within established frameworks. The company will provide IT hardware for remote work. Occasional visits to the office and job sites may occur, particularly for those located within commuting distance of Madison, WI. Paid time off and holidays are offered as part of the contractor arrangement, and the environment is closely integrated with strategic utility projects. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Madison, WI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
