Job Description

General Accounting Internship Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a student intern to work in their Financial Accounting department. During this internship, we will be providing insight to the inner workings of the general accounting team and offer a unique opportunity for college students to learn about the different facets available in the accounting profession. The learning experiences acquired while working side by side professionals offers a well-balanced introduction into our industry and to our business. A General Accounting Internship offers the following learning opportunities : Training and hands on experience in processing, applying general accounting principals and standards Adjusting to multiple and changing priorities, flexibility Build skills to identify discrepancies and errors Produce quality, accurate, prompt, and reliable results reported in a clear & concise manner Engagement and awareness of accounting software upgrade
  • This is an on-site, non-remote/non-telecommuting position
  • Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc.
  • Candidates MUST be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associates/Bachelors/Masters) and be able to provide documentation if requested.
Enrollment in a certification program does not qualify. In this position, the Intern will learn different suites of tools, such as our accounting software (Lawson), our work management system (Maximo) and the variety of software that comes with Microsoft. The Intern will also learn to work with the general accounting team on industry best-practices, common issues, and use critical thinking skills to work through different scenarios and potential solutions.
Distribution of Projects and Time:
Processing journals: 20%
  • Support team members by compiling, preparing and recording ledger transactions and assisting with accounting close and reporting processes
Solutions:
40%
  • Support team by participating in the development and implementation of the new accounting software upgrade
Reconciliation:
15%
  • Support team members by assisting with monthly accounting close and reporting processes Record retention and administration: 25%
  • Assisting and supporting the team with documentation support including documenting processes and tasks This internship position requires a 40 hour work week as-needed during the summer months, from June 8th through August 14th.
Additionally, this can be flexible to support a student's school schedule if needed. This position may be extended into 2027 dependent on business needs, budget and the applicant's availability and upcoming projects providing additional learning experiences and support. Maximum of 20 hours during school.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (1/3 of the time), and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary only if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other criteria are met.
  • Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions within an office working environment.
