Project Accountant Job Description The Project Accountant supports the financial management of multiple engineering, consulting, and project-based initiatives. This role serves as a key partner to project managers and technical teams by overseeing project billing, contract administration, budgeting, collections, and financial reporting. The Project Accountant manages client invoicing, maintains contract documentation, tracks project budgets, analyzes financial performance, and helps resolve financial issues that may impact project delivery. The position also provides backup support for accounts payable, timesheet review, and expense processing while working independently and collaborating closely with operational leaders and technical staff. Responsibilities Manage the full financial lifecycle of multiple projects, including tracking costs, monitoring budgets, and maintaining accurate project financial records to support project profitability. Prepare, process, and review client invoices and billing in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring alignment with contract terms, project milestones, and specific billing requirements. Enter and maintain project budgets in the appropriate systems, track expenditures, identify variances, and provide regular financial performance updates to project managers and leadership. Administer project contracts by entering fee and budget information, updating contract documentation, and ensuring compliance with customer agreements and contract billing structures. Generate project financial reports and analyze key performance metrics to support stakeholders in making informed financial and operational decisions. Track outstanding receivables, communicate with clients regarding payment status, and support collections activities to improve cash flow and reduce aged receivables. Provide backup support for accounts payable functions, including coding invoices, processing A/P transactions, reviewing expense reports, and assisting with timesheet administration. Support general accounting activities related to project work, including coordination with general ledger processes and construction accounting where applicable. Collaborate closely with project managers, operational leaders, and technical teams to address financial issues affecting project delivery and ensure accurate financial information. Maintain high standards of financial accuracy, attention to detail, and documentation quality across all project accounting activities. Deliver responsive and professional customer service to internal teams and external clients regarding project financial matters. Assist in mentoring junior accounting staff and contribute to the development of team capabilities in project accounting and financial operations. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience in project accounting, including managing the financial lifecycle of multiple concurrent projects. Strong skills in budget management, including monitoring project budgets, tracking expenditures, and identifying variances. Proficiency in client invoicing and billing processes, with the ability to align billing with contract terms and project milestones. Experience providing support for accounts payable, including coding invoices, processing A/P transactions, and reviewing expense reports and timesheets. Ability to perform financial reporting and analysis for projects, including generating reports and interpreting performance metrics. Experience with collections management, including tracking outstanding receivables and supporting collection efforts. Knowledge of accounting principles, general ledger processes, and construction accounting practices. Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the use of PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and reporting functions. Experience working with ERP and project accounting systems. Understanding of contract billing structures and how they impact project invoicing and revenue recognition. Work Environment This role is based onsite, with an eventual hybrid schedule of three days in the office and two days remote each week. The work environment centers on collaboration with project managers, operational leaders, and technical teams across engineering and consulting projects. The position offers exposure to large-scale, complex project work and the opportunity to build expertise in project accounting, contract management, and financial operations. The role is fast-paced and deadline-driven, with a strong focus on accuracy, responsiveness, and professional communication, and provides opportunities to mentor junior team members and expand leadership skills Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plymouth Meeting, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $31.00 - $41.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
