Job Description
Description We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to provide accounting support for a real estate portfolio that includes retail, commercial, and multifamily properties in Charleston, South Carolina. This Contract position will partner closely with property management and accounting leadership to maintain accurate financial records, support timely reporting, and help keep day-to-day accounting operations running smoothly. The ideal candidate brings strong property accounting experience and is comfortable working across multiple asset types in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day accounting activities for a portfolio of commercial, retail, and multifamily properties, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and on time.
- Prepare month-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and review of financial results for assigned properties.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts while supporting accurate accrual-based accounting across the portfolio.
- Work closely with property management teams to address financial questions, resolve discrepancies, and support operational decision-making.
- Produce and review property-level financial reports to ensure completeness, accuracy, and alignment with reporting deadlines.
- Support accounting processes related to property management operations, including oversight of records and coordination of financial data within MRI software.
- Assist with system-related accounting tasks and process updates within internal property accounting platforms when needed.
- Help strengthen accounting workflows by identifying inconsistencies, improving documentation, and supporting compliance with internal controls. Requirements
- Experience in property accounting, preferably within commercial, retail, or multifamily real estate environments.
- Strong working knowledge of month-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement support.
- Solid understanding of accrual accounting principles and general ledger maintenance.
- Hands-on experience using MRI software in a property management or real estate accounting setting.
- Ability to work effectively with property management teams and accounting leadership in a collaborative environment.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple properties or entities simultaneously.
- Proficiency in preparing accurate financial records and resolving accounting discrepancies in a timely manner.
