Full Job Description Job Summary:
The Transportation Financial Accountant is responsible for managing and analyzing the financial activities of a transportation or logistics organization. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, budgeting, cost analysis, and compliance with accounting standards while supporting operational efficiency. The accountant works closely with finance, operations, fleet management, and leadership to monitor transportation costs, improve profitability, and ensure regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, journal entries, and account reconciliations. Analyze transportation costs, including fuel, maintenance, labor, tolls, and fleet expenses. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. Assist in developing budgets, forecasts, and financial plans for transportation operations. Monitor operating expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies, and applicable regulations. Process and reconcile accounts payable and accounts receivable related to transportation vendors and customers. Review freight invoices, carrier payments, and transportation contracts for financial accuracy. Support month-end and year-end closing processes. Assist with internal and external audits by preparing required documentation. Track fixed assets, including fleet vehicles and transportation equipment. Analyze financial data and provide recommendations to improve operational performance and profitability. Collaborate with operations, logistics, procurement, and management teams to support business objectives. Qualifications Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in transportation, logistics, or supply chain. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, QuickBooks, or similar ERP systems). Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Preferred Qualifications Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation preferred. Experience with transportation management systems (TMS) and fleet management software. Knowledge of freight billing, fuel tax reporting, and transportation industry regulations.
