Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION
The Accountant is responsible for the coordination of daily processing of all interfaced accounting information, the timely and accurate preparation of monthly financial statements, relevant tax filings and supporting bank related activities through account tracking and reconciliations.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist in month end close and preparation of financial statements to be distributed to the City Manager and Staff 2. Bookmark and review monthly financial statements then distribute 3. Audit the daily cash receipts prepared by the cashiers. This includes verifying receipt numbers and proper coding of transactions. Create journal entries for cash postings 4. Reconcile bank statement for the City's operating and payroll accounts monthly 5. Maintain fixed asset database. Responsible for reconciling the Fixed Asset Database to the General Ledger. Responsible for journalizing entries to record the purchase of new fixed assets, retirements, or trade-in of fixed assets 6. Process property tax payments received by county - reconcile receivable and revenue to general ledger. 7. Process payment of electric, natural gas & phone bills. Maintain spreadsheet to assist in preparing projected expenditures and next year's budget requests. Notify department heads of any unusual usage. 8. Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly 9. Allocate garage part inventory monthly 10. Assist in the budgeting process 11. Process daily payments that are received by mail 12. Work with department heads to maintain a current contract maintenance list of expenditures. Monitor on a monthly basis to keep current and accurate. 13. Update franchise tax worksheet and scan copies of these checks for end of year audit. 14. Process quarterly mayor and city council checks 15. File Unclaimed Property report and maintain records 16. Perform other related duties as assigned
TYPICAL DECISIONS
The incumbent analyzes financial transactions and the general ledger for accuracy and completeness.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:
Position requires the knowledge of the theories and principles of accounting and must incorporate governmental accounting principles into that knowledge base to be effective.
Skills:
Position requires proficiency in the use of computer equipment and appropriate accounting software. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
Experience:
Three years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a municipal setting
NOTE:
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications may be an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Texas class C driver s license
