Job Description
Description We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to support core accounting operations for a site in Suffolk, Virginia. This role plays a key part in maintaining accurate financial records, strengthening reporting quality, and providing analysis that supports plant performance. The position offers broad exposure to close activities, payables, inventory accounting, and financial planning in a fast-paced operational environment.
Responsibilities:
- Manage monthly close activities by preparing journal entries, assembling backup schedules, and helping ensure timely completion of financial reporting tasks.
- Partner with the Plant Controller to reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate variances that affect reporting accuracy.
- Contribute to recurring forecasts and annual budgeting by compiling financial data, updating assumptions, and supporting planning discussions.
- Analyze operating and financial results to improve forecast reliability and assist leaders with informed business decisions.
- Review vendor invoices against purchasing and receiving records, resolve mismatches, and coordinate approvals for non-PO invoices before payment processing.
- Verify proper tax treatment, account coding, and supporting documentation for invoices, including items that should be recorded as prepaid expenses or fixed assets.
- Maintain organized invoice records, recurring payment tracking, and timely submission of documents for accounts payable processing in accordance with payment terms.
- Perform regular inventory counts across raw materials, spare parts, consumables, and finished goods while researching discrepancies and correcting inventory-related issues promptly.
- Monitor shipment activity and plant load-out records, coordinating with port personnel to confirm product movements are accurately captured in the system each day. Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or another quantitative discipline.
- At least 5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within a manufacturing or plant-based environment.
- Hands-on experience with month-end close, general ledger activity, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
- Background handling high volumes of invoices, purchase orders, or other transaction-heavy accounting processes.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines, follow through on open items, and maintain a high degree of accuracy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and accounting systems such as Microsoft Dynamics or comparable ERP platforms.
- Ability to protect confidential financial information and collaborate effectively with employees across multiple levels of the organization.
