SENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Town of Culpeper Salary Range - $80,781.36 - $129,250.17 The Town of Culpeper is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented accounting professional to join our Finance Department as a Senior Accountant. This position plays a key role in maintaining the Town's financial integrity through advanced accounting, financial reporting, reconciliation, and audit support functions.
Primary functions include:
Planning, designing, and implementing accounting systems and procedures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standards. Maintaining and reconciling financial records, including monthly and annual account reconciliations. Coordinating bank transactions, deposits, ACH transfers, wire transactions, and lockbox activity. Maintaining capital asset and debt records and schedules. Assisting with preparation of monthly financial reports, the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), Single Audit reports, and other required financial reports. Recording year-end adjustments and preparing schedules and reconciliations for the annual audit. Maintaining internal controls and ensuring compliance with established fiscal policies and procedures. Providing financial and accounting assistance to Town departments. Serving as a backup for accounts payable processing as needed. Training and supporting Finance Department staff as required. Performing related duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications:
Comprehensive knowledge of municipal accounting principles, governmental accounting standards, and financial reporting requirements. Thorough knowledge of financial controls, accounting procedures, and requirements of the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts. Ability to analyze and solve complex accounting problems. Ability to prepare accurate financial reports and maintain detailed accounting records. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, auditors, and other stakeholders. Ability to work independently and as part of a professional team.
Education & Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting, finance, or a related field and considerable experience in public finance administration, auditing, and/or financial reporting. Candidates must have a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of direct experience in local government finance, accounting, and/or auditing and possess knowledge of governmental accounting standards.
