THE ROLE
As a Staff Accountant, you will play a critical role in maintaining the City's financial integrity by supporting general ledger functions, preparing financial reports, and assisting with budgeting and financial management activities. This position ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Washington State Auditor requirements while supporting sound internal controls. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of professional accounting experience, strong analytical skills, and the ability to interpret complex financial data. You will collaborate with Finance staff, City departments, and external agencies to support financial reporting, audits, and fiscal planning.
Key responsibilities include:
Preparing financial statements, reports, and projections in accordance with GAAP Maintaining and reconciling journals, ledgers, and financial records Monitoring fund activity and resolving discrepancies Supporting payroll-related accounting, labor and benefit budgeting Performing financial analysis related to rates, labor agreements, and debt service Accounting for grants, debt issuance, and reimbursement tracking Assisting with budget preparation and long-term financial planning Serving as a resource to departments on financial policies and procedures To view the full job description, click here: A background check will be required upon acceptance of a conditional offer.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.) Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field Three (3) or more years of accounting experience, including financial reporting and application of GAAP Strong knowledge of accounting principles and governmental accounting practices Proficiency in spreadsheets and financial systems Ability to analyze financial data and perform complex calculations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in governmental accounting Experience with grant accounting and debt service tracking Knowledge of Washington State accounting and reporting requirements Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or progress toward certification Bilingual (English/Spanish)
